Wolverine’s Accessibility Options Make It Violent Like the ’90s X-Men

Marvel’s Wolverine had the most violent video game trailer of the PlayStation 5 era, but the developers made sure that the blood and carnage can be turned off using the game’s accessibility options.

Insomniac Games first teased Marvel’s Wolverine in 2021, with a short story trailer showing him unleashing his claws on Madripoor. It wasn’t until June 2026 of Sony State of Play that fans were given a good look at the gameplay, and unlike Wolverine from the old X-Men cartoons, this version of Logan is free to carve up enemies with his Adamantium claws.

Marvel’s Wolverine Release Date Confirmed (Also Ducking GTA 6)

Insomniac Games announced the release date for Marvel’s Wolverine on Twitter/X, and it launches on PS5 ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The violence shown in Marvel’s Wolverine trailer may be too much for some, especially people who want to stream the game. Fortunately, Insomniac Games has prepared something for fans who don’t enjoy Wolverine giving emergency vasectomies to people who hate the world, as revealed in an interview with IGN.

In an interview with Marvel’s Wolverine Game Director Mike Daly, it was revealed that unwanted destruction can be reduced.

“We know it’s not for everyone,” Daly said, “And because we knew this was going to be a big part of the game from the beginning, we also used the accessibility feature to cover the explosion.”

Wolverine’s perfect trick is that he has skeletal claws covered in the strongest non-magical metal in the Marvel universe, meaning there’s very little he can cut through. This has caused problems with media aimed at children, especially since that is the target audience for much of the X-Men content.

Wolverine’s perfect trick is that he has skeletal claws covered in the strongest non-magical metal in the Marvel universe, meaning there’s very little he can cut through.

The Wolverine that has appeared in the X-Men cartoons, especially that of the ’90s, has always stuck to scaring enemies with his claws, eventually being able to use them on enemies made of metal. Thankfully, the X-Men have no shortage of iron enemies, with the likes of Sentinels and Reavers giving Wolverine plenty of opportunities to get his claws out. However, this has resulted in bloodless killings.

That’s why it’s surprising to see Wolverine tear people apart in such a spectacular way in Marvel’s Wolverine trailer. Of course he was able to be very violent in the live action movies, but even these never showed him ripping people’s insides out. This includes Logan himself, who takes a ton of damage from enemies, and has to rely on his Healing Factor to quickly stitch up his wounds.

It won’t be as simple as just covering up the blood effects, considering how Wolverine cuts enemies to pieces in all kinds of interesting ways in the new trailer. The scaled down version might end up looking like a completely different game, or maybe all the enemies will be replaced by robots, like the old German version of Team Fortress.

For longtime X-Men fans, it’s surprising to see Wolverine finally on the loose, especially since the shadow of censorship has hung over him for so long. Insomniac Games should be commended for giving Logan the R-rated video game he truly deserves, especially after Marvel’s more family-friendly Spider-Man games.

Not everyone is down for the high level of on-screen violence, especially when it comes to blood and guts, so Insomniac Games should also be commended for allowing people to play without feeling bad, rather than forcing everyone to ride, especially after Wolverine’s long history of not using his claws for their intended purpose.
