Valve’s annual tradition never fails to leave PC gamers everywhere with slightly lighter wallets and a sudden, strong desire to buy digital titles they might not play for months – and I say this with authority, of course.
However, just when we thought our bank accounts were safe and we could finally catch our breath, Valve decided to drop a quality of life update. The company has officially revamped its gifting and wishlist programs across the platform, introducing a wave of long-overdue features that make buying games for your friends (and non-gaming relatives) smoother than ever.
Buying Games Without a Steam Account
According to a Steam News post, the biggest game changer in this new update revolves around guest checkout. Back in 2024, Valve quietly introduced the ability to make purchases without logging into an active account, but it was limited to digital gift cards and hardware products like the Steam Deck.
Now, Valve is opening those floodgates: anyone can buy real, full digital games on Steam without needing to create or sign in to an account.
This is a win-win for those awkward birthday or holiday situations when a well-meaning family member wants to buy you a certain game on your wish list, but is instantly disappointed by the prospect of creating a username and setting up an entire digital launcher just to complete one transaction. Now, you can simply throw them a direct link to your wishlist, and they can be out as a guest in seconds!
In addition to hassle-free guest purchases, Valve is also finally getting its head around gifting directly via email. We’ve all been in that frustrating situation when you want to surprise a friend or relative, but you actually don’t know their Steam account handle – or worse, the email address you have doesn’t match the one tied to their gaming profile.
The new Steam program fixes this by allowing you to send digital gift cards and full games directly to any email address. That way, the recipient simply receives a secure link that allows them to log into any active Steam account they use and claim their prize. If they forget to claim it within 30 days, Valve automatically refunds the purchase, ensuring your money never runs out.
And there’s more! Valve also addresses the region’s infamous gifting process. Previously, if you wanted to buy a game for a friend who lives in a country with high regional prices, Steam would block the direct purchase, forcing you to guess the exact currency conversion and send a digital gift card (trust me, as a Brazilian gamer who plays with a bunch of international friends, this was a headache). Now, under this new update, they will automatically calculate the regional price difference right at checkout, allowing you to gift games to anyone on your friends list regardless of the price difference.

Considering that gifting used to be a no brainer whenever non-gaming family members tried to buy us games, seeing Valve go all the way right after the Summer Sale is great news!
