Original War Creator Criticizes Sons of Sparta: “What Were They Thinking?”

David Jaffe is a very influential name in the gaming industry as one of the original creators of God of War, one of the creators. PlayStationThe franchises are very prosperous and successful till date.
However, in recent years, Jaffe has become equally famous for his unfiltered presence on YouTube. On his channel, he often dissects the industry and gives his honest thoughts on the latest news, rarely mixing his opinions. And he is well known for his honesty about direction Santa Monica Studio has taken with God of War since its relaunch in 2018.
Now, we have another episode of that! After the shadow of God of War: Sons of Spartaa 2.5D action-platformer that explores Kratos’ life before he became the rage-fueled Ghost of Sparta we met in 2005, Jaffe revealed that he was not happy about it.

In a video published last Saturday in his YouTube channel, David Jaffe revealed his thoughts on Santa Monica’s latest release, and he seems pretty pissed off about it.
He actually begins the video by admitting that a 2.5D God of War game was something he always wanted to see happen. However, he quickly says that the Sons of Sparta is not the execution he expected, far from it.
“What were they thinking? What were they thinking? is one of the first programs Jaffe uses to vent his feelings. Afterwards, he explains that the game isn’t bad at all, but his problem is that it’s just “good”.

Some video game stories are hailed as masterpieces but these ten are not worthy of mention.
The developer goes on and criticizes the game’s UI and systems for being too confusing and derivative God of War Ragnarök (a game Jaffe has publicly stated he hates) also took a shot at the writing, saying there’s too much dialogue and not enough gameplay, eventually calling little Kratos “a normal, boring f*cking kid.” He even said, “It’s like we’re watching a WB Kids TV show.
Throughout the video, Jaffe explained that he wanted to see an arena player with a violent, raw, and serious sound, even asking why Santa Monica Studio didn’t work with Slain or Blasphemous engineers to achieve that dark aesthetic. “Who would have thought that this was what the audience wanted? I don’t know,” he said.
The developer’s main argument is that fans don’t care about a version of Kratos that doesn’t match the trilogies they already know; to him, the Sparta Sons version feels “disrespectful” to the character and the franchise as a whole.
It is worth noting, however, that Jaffe admitted that he has not finished the game, having played for about an hour. Regardless, he concluded with a clear message for Sony: “I can say based on the hour I’ve played and everything else I’ve seen … send Sony a message that if *ck off. Stop messing around with Kratos. Here’s a news flash: We gave you a great actor in 2005, and you replaced him in 2018. Okay, good. F*ck off.”
