In a recent interview with a YouTuber and podcaster Lex FriedmanJeff Kaplan finally revealed the truth behind the scene of his parting with Blizzard in 2021, saying that unreasonable financial demands from the board prompted the definitive break.
According to Kaplan, the company’s internal culture changed significantly during his last years there, when Blizzard became more focused on quick profits. Management sets high revenue targets for the development team, leading to a critical period of leadership tension.
It was then that the board reportedly issued a brutal conclusion directly to the head of Overwatch: if the game did not reach the set financial goals (at that time, it is driven almost entirely to fall. “What ended up breaking my Blizzard job was, I was called into the CFO’s office, he sat me down, he gave me a date – at the time it was 2020, and it was going to go back to 2021, but then it was 2020 – he said, ‘Overwatch has to do. [this amount of money] in 2020. And then every year after that, it needs recurring income [this amount of money],’” Kaplan explained [make this amount of money]we will lay off 1,000 people. And that will be for you. And that was just the biggest ‘f*** you’ moment I had in my career. It felt real to be in that situation.”
The painful experience literally changed the veteran developer’s view not only of the game industry but also of Blizzard itself, the place where he once thought he would retire – and where he may have stayed to lead Overwatch to this day.
“I liked it [Blizzard]it was part of who I was, and I felt part of it, and I literally thought I was going to withdraw from that place. I never thought the day would come [that I would leave]. [But] it was like that – I said, ‘We’re done here.’ Fortunately, for Blizzard, that CFO is gone,” added Kaplan.
