CD Projekt Red April Fools Joke Goes Viral Online

Every year, we must survive the treacherous waters of April Fool’s Day. After all, who hasn’t pulled a prank from a friend, company, or website? We were all there! However, I have found the perfect way to face this day without being made a fool of: embracing humor, laughing and, best of all, hunting.

One of the gods of story-driven role-playing games.

And this year, the search was quite short, since CD Project red just released a fake trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that manages to satirize some of the strongest rumors surrounding the franchise recently in a clever way, while making every fan laugh out loud!

Introducing Project ROACH

CD Projekt Just Dropped The Best April Fools' Day Joke You'll See Today 2

Without any prior warning, the Polish studio published an announcement trailer on YouTube on Wednesday titled The ROACH projectcomplete with the full ownership of The Witcher 3. At first glance, it looks like a brand new DLC announcement for the popular RPG. However, as soon as you hit play, you quickly realize that something is wrong!

Video features Sebastian Kalemba – Game Director at CD Projekt, currently leading the development of The Witcher 4 – unveiling a new revolutionary accessory. And the gadget in question is a horse-shaped controller, a tribute to our beloved Roach, Geralt of Rivia’s loyal friend.

“There is nothing better than the feeling of roaming the fields of Velen on horseback,” said Kalemba in the carriage. “Now, you get to experience the game as Geralt and his trusted partner, Roach.” Then there are some pictures of Kalemba himself using the new “controller”, which is probably one of the best places to see today.

The pitch is also followed by behind-the-scenes footage purportedly from early motion capture sessions back in 2015. But it’s all a lie, and you can tell that right away, as it includes hilarious scenes of actors wearing those rubber horse masks and doing completely ridiculous moves.

What’s more, the video description even points to a website where you can buy your horse controller today – I’ll let you click the link yourself to experience the ultimate surprise. You can check out CD Projekt Red’s full April Fool’s Day art below:

The most notable part of this teaser is how the studio is playing on the latest community buzz, as many rumors of a surprise DLC for The Witcher 3 have been ramping up for the past few weeks. So, was this practice dispelling stereotypes, or was it a clever distraction to keep it from the truth? We will have to wait and see!
