7 RPGs for PS3 are still locked on Original Hardware

The seventh generation of consoles saw a significant change in the gaming landscape. It was a huge leap for more reliable graphics and a time when Unreal Engine 3 was booming, especially in Western games. However, since the engine never had an official Japanese translation, many Japanese game developers had to create their own engines or simply failed to adapt, letting their series fall into obscurity.

On the other hand, we have seen the return of RPGs from the Western market, many of which follow the same 3D-based design Diablobut RPGs anyway. Most of the titles released in the seventh generation have already received a port or remaster in some way, and few are still stuck on the PS3.

8 PS2 RPGs Still Locked to Original Hardware

The PS2 didn’t live only for JRPGs, as these titles here can attest.

Anyway, I wanted to point out which RPGs are stuck on the original hardware, either because the developers were never interested in porting or because it just wouldn’t be worth the effort. There aren’t many games, but I did my best to find as many RPGs as possible. Also, no JRPGs here because that’s another list.

Since we don’t have many RPGs attached to the PS3, I took the liberty of including some games available on the Xbox 360 (but without backwards compatibility) and others that only have RPG elements.

How to Train Your Dragon

And Fight Them

PS3 RPGs Are Still Stuck On Original Hardware - How To Train Your Dragon

The PS3 didn’t have many licensed games, but it still delivered one or two. How to Train Your Dragon it wasn’t really an RPG, but it had elements of the genre. The play takes place one year after the end of the film, and the celebrations are now in full swing. To recall, the dragon tournaments take place, which is where the entire game of the title revolves.

A loop of How to Train Your Dragon it’s about, well, training your dragon and engaging them in combat. Wars give me a Monster Rancher vibe, but we have great control over our dragon, we attack him like in a fighting game and make the right input combinations to start a combo.

Although we do not fight, we train and collect ingredients to feed our beautiful children and improve qualities such as Mood, Trust, and Food. We get new ingredients by entering dungeons and participating in mini-games with the chosen dragon.

Unknown Legends: Dark Empire

Time to Tell a Tale

PS3 RP3s Still Stuck on Original Hardware - Unknown Legends

Unknown Legends: Dark Empire is a 3D hack-and-slash game genre that has been popular since the PS2 era, alongside games like Legends of the X-Men again Champions of Norrath. At the beginning of the game, we choose a class, then defeat enemies while leveling up and expanding our features, learning new spells, and collecting more equipment.

The reason why we had so many games at that time is because it worked. There was something painful about crushing our enemies as we gradually became stronger and more destructive. It’s even better if we do it together, somewhere Unknown Legends: Dark Empire offered by two local players or four players online.

As the name implies, the article is part of the Unknown Legends series, born on the PSP. The game does not share the same structure as its predecessors. In The Dark Kingdomwe play as elite soldiers who return home after a long time, but find that their master has fallen to the temptation of evil forces, and they are the only ones who can do something.

Genji: Days of the Blade

Samurai vs. Demons

PS3 RPGs Still Stuck on Original Hardware - Genji's Blade Days

Genji: Days of the Blade is another RPG-leaning title on the list because, for the most part, the game is a pure hack-and-slash action title more than anything else. But anyway, who knows, right? It’s often considered one of the best samurai titles on the PS3, so it deserves a shout out.

Genji: Days of the Blade it follows each other directly Genji: Dawn of the Samurai. The Heishi family returns and can now turn its members into demons, which must be defeated by the main characters of the classic game, Yoshitsune Minamoto and Benkei Musashibo. This time, they will be accompanied by Shizuka Gozen and Lord Buson.

It is possible to switch between four characters at will during the action, each with their own abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. RPG elements are found in the progression. In stages, we find accessories that can increase character stats and weapon attack power. It is also possible to find new weapons and items, adding a variety of combat.

Tokyo Jungle

Welcome to the Jungle

PS3 RPGs Still Locked in Original Hardware - Tokyo Jungle

Can you survive the jungle? What if the forest is in Tokyo and you are an animal? That’s it Tokyo Jungle it’s about. In the 21st century, humanity has almost disappeared, leaving Tokyo teeming with wildlife. We control some of these animals as they try to survive in this new world.

There are two ways to Tokyo Jungle: story and survival. In the course of the story, we go from animal to animal, starting with a Pomeranian, then a deer, a wolf, and even a lion, until we find out what happened to humanity. Each animal has a different game that forces them to be cunning or aggressive.

Survival mode challenges the player to see how many years they can survive, adding up points at the end. This is a mod with great RPG features. Each animal has its own stats, and by completing challenges or leveling up, such as defeating animals, the stats increase, leading to increased chances of living more years. A good foundation that reminds me of the time when I played EVO: Search for Eden on SNES, remove the evolution part.

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance

iPhone Game Remake

Release date

April 12, 2011

If you thought so Mega Man X DiVE or Octopath Traveler 0 that started the strategy of turning mobile games into premium console titles, then never played Dungeon Hunter: Alliancea hack-and-slash RPG that is a remake of it Dungeon Hunteran iPhone game released in 2009 – which is crazy considering I got my first smartphone in 2010.

As a hack-and-slash game with an isometric view, Dungeon Hunter: Alliance it has all the tropes of style. We choose one of the first three classes, face randomly generated dungeons, level up, increase attributes, learn new skills, get new equipment and wear them, wash and repeat forever.

It was a formula that, at the time, was still popular and it worked, like I said above, so you know, going back to the source and so on. Dungeon Hunter: Alliance it also had a PS Vita version in 2012, but it always stuck to these older Sony consoles.

Ragnarok Odyssey: Ace

More Poring Deaths

PS3 RPGs still stuck on Original Hardware - Ragnarok Odyssey Ace

While Ragnarok Odyssey: Ace might be on the list of PS3 JRPGs that stick to the hardware, it’s very similar to it Monster Hunter than anything else (a series I don’t even consider a de facto RPG), so I’m trying to stretch the genre a bit just to add this entry here. And finally, it’s worth it, even more if you’re human Ragnarok a follower.

As I said, Ragnarok Odyssey: Ace has a playback loop like Monster Hunterbut it is based on the doctrine of Ragnarok franchise. We start by creating a character and choose a Job, some of which are inspired by the series. After that, we were thrown straight into the Guild Hall and forced to accept the job of hunting innocent Porings.

The whole context of Ragnarok Odyssey: Ace it’s just that: receiving new missions, completing them, being rewarded, and so on. The game has no level system and instead supports progress on missions, both by finding them in the field and by building them. There is a card mechanic that allows us to put them into equipment to increase character attributes or learn new skills.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

Help with Background

PS3 RPGs still stuck on Original Hardware - The Lord of the Rings in the North

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North it’s a strange case because the game was once ported from PS3 and available on Steam, but if you look at its game page, it’s no longer available, thus making it locked on the original hardware again – it’s on Xbox 360, but without backwards compatibility.

War in the North is a typical action RPG. We can control three characters: Eradan, Andriel, and Farin, a human guardian, an elf mage, and a young warrior, respectively. Each has their own play style, gimmick to experiment with, and their own abilities. At each new level, it is possible to increase the attributes and learn more skills, in addition, of course, to find or buy new equipment. If you play single player, you will have team members controlled by AI, but you can also play local co-op.

The story of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North takes place after the main story, from the time Frodo leaves the Shire until the destruction of the ring. The role of three characters is to defeat the Sauron General. The gameplay overlaps with the main characters of the story, but it’s clearly not canonical, just a little fancy. Also, we can’t control the characters in the book, only the actual ones in the game.
