Discord Nitro Now Comes With Game Pass “Starter Edition” – WGB

There are already quite a few ways you can get Game Pass these days, and now we can add another way to the list: Discord. Learn more about the host, Discord Nitro.

Well, the boffins at Discord and Xbox have announced a new partnership, so now a Discord Nitro subscription gives you what they call a “premium edition” of an Xbox Game at no extra cost. This includes 50+ titles to choose from, and new games will be added down the line. The official lineup has yet to be announced, although previous leaks suggest it will contain 58 titles that look very similar to the existing Game Pass Essential selection, minus a few games that were recently added to the service over the past week.

At first, I thought this “first edition” was simply Game Pass Essential, a £6.99 subscription that lets you play online, has a library of 68 games and lets you stream your own titles. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, as the Discord Nitro version limits game streaming to 10 hours per month.

And there’s another trade-in: the Discord Nitro Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition – known as DNXGPS….no, that sounds silly – and it doesn’t include the console’s online multiplayer. Which is ironic, considering Discword is a widely used tool among multiplayer gamers.

Free-to-play online games are an exception to this rule, but otherwise, if you want to play online, you’ll still need to get at least Game Pass Essential for £6.99/$9.99 a month.

Unless, of course, you’re playing on PC where you don’t need a monthly subscription to play online. In other words, the new Discord bundle seems to be aimed more at the PC crowd.

Game Pass subscribers will also start receiving additional Discord items. Eligible Game Pass users will receive 250 Discord Orbs per month, 1.2x additional Orbs when completing Discord Quests, and Discord Shop discounts.

On top of all that, an Xbox Wire post boasts new updates to Discord that “make it easier to find and jump into games included with Game Pass.” According to them, if you see a friend playing something cool, whether it’s in their game stream or a Discord game activity, you can look for the play button and select Game Pass to start playing it.

Asha Sharma recently stepped into the helm of Xbox and has begun making changes, such as lowering the price of Game Pass, creating a new logo and writing an open letter admitting to the brand’s many quirks. But it’s not clear if this new Discord plan is what he’s doing or if the ball was already rolling in Phil Spencer’s time.
