7 Surprising Pokémon Evolutions in FireRed & LeafGreen

There’s an iconic line from Forrest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.”
While that’s not something that always works in Pokémon, you’d be surprised how often FireRed and LeafGreen evolutions change everything completely.
We’ll have some obvious changes to talk about here (we’re looking at you, Eeveelutions), as well as the evolution of the most popular Pokémon of all time. However, some of them may surprise you.
10 Best Pokémon To Add To Your FireRed And LeafGreen Team If You Choose Bulbasaur
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen feature some amazing Pokémon, but what makes the best team when you choose Bulbasaur as your starter?

Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon
Since we just talked about Eevee evolution, this seems like an obvious place to start, especially given how iconic these Pokémon are.
Eevee is a common type of Pokemon with the unique feature of being able to evolve into a variety of Pokemon. In FireRed and LeafGreen, there are three modes to choose from: electric-type Jolteon, water-type Vaporeon, and fire-type Flareon.
Subsequent games would add to the many types of Pokémon Eevee could evolve into, but this is where it all began. No matter which generation, though, one thing is certain: Eevee will always evolve into something completely different.

Butterfree
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Caterpie and Metapod are useless. I mean, in many ways, they are.
Not only do you meet them early in the game, but it feels like every Metapod will only use Harden and nothing else. I hated that I used to meet them in the Veridian Forest. It’s not exactly a Pokemon that strikes fear into its opponents, and it wasn’t one that I honestly cared about using in battle.
Eventually, Metapod will evolve into Butterfree. It’s still a bug-type, but its moveset has been greatly expanded, allowing you to catch your opponents off-guard thanks to its respectable Special Attack stats.

Beedrill
This is the portable version of Butterfree. The exact same idea, it comes from Weedle and Kakuna being very weak before becoming something respectable at least. Like Metapod, Kakuna is completely useless, and I absolutely hated it. Seriously, he didn’t do anything!
Beedrill also has the added benefit of being a Poison-type Pokémon, which has its pros and cons that come with it.
I’m not saying that Beedrill has late-game potential, but it has played an early role for me in the past. It also exudes a terrifying presence, and nine-year-old Jake thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

Kabutops
While on the topic of bugs, it seems like the perfect time to bring up Kabutops.
One of the two fossil Pokémon, it comes from the humble Kabuto, best described as a weak looking crab.
Kabutops, however, is imposing, intimidating, and looks ready to strike at a moment’s notice. I’ve always been a Kabutops fan for this reason. It looks incredible and is much better than its counterpart, Omastar. In addition, it has a very large evolutionary change, too.
Sadly, Twitch Plays Pokémon didn’t agree with me and went with Helix Fossil. It was their loss, if you ask me.

You can enjoy Pokémon at any age, but it strikes a different chord with children.

Dragonite
If you would have told me that Dratini and Dratini and Dratini and Dratini’s cute and charming Dratini would evolve into one of the best Pokémon in all of FireRed and LeafGreen, I wouldn’t have believed you.
Dragonite already has the benefit of the Dragon type, which it shares with its predecessors, but the stats take things up a notch. Attack’s massive stat line, combined with Pokémon typing and decent base stats, make it a true force to be reckoned with.
I won’t lie: I didn’t think anything of Dratini and Dragonair until I fought Lance and his Dragonite in the Elite Four. That changed my tune immediately.

The search
This is less about Seaking and more about the fact that Golden is a pushover. It’s small, it’s weak, and its lasting legacy is the way it moves around in Super Smash Bros. There’s nothing more depressing than picking up a Poké Ball, using it, and hearing “Goldeen Goldeen!”
While there are several other superior options for water-type Pokémon statistically, Seaking has a very respectable attack stat line. Combined with its large horn, Seaking will delight Golden loyalists.
Seriously, does anyone respect Golden? It’s arguably one of the worst water Pokémon of all time, but it’s surpassed by some useless fish that turns out to be magical.
1
Gyrados
Magikarp is useless. Like, it’s useless. Even I knew that when some random guy tried to sell me one. I knew better, but maybe that guy was up to something.
Despite only knowing the useless Splash move, Magikarp eventually evolves into Gyrados, one of the most impressive Pokémon in all of FireRed and LeafGreen.
The second I read this as a kid, I immediately rushed to grab a Magikarp and did what I could to transform it as quickly as possible. All that work was well worth it. This represents the best of Pokémon and how something innocent and careless can turn into something amazing. Sometimes, it’s a real Pokémon, but sometimes, it’s a humble trainer starting his Pokémon journey.
