The Unreal Engine Is Ending Its Most Popular Feature, And The Devs Are Splitting Up

One of the most popular creation tools in the world, Unreal Engine, is currently in the mechanic shop receiving a lot of tuning and new components, as developers prepare to launch UE6 for early access, but developers are divided on other changes being made.

Indie Dev Starts Working on UE5: “Bad Development Practice Rather Than Engine Fault”

As the old saying goes, a bad UE5 programmer always blames his tools.

The main purpose of UE6 is to combine Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite into one package, while introducing a new game framework called Scene Graph, which was designed in their new programming model, Verse, which replaces Blueprints.

Unreal Engine 6 is the Beginning of the End for Blueprints

Unreal Engine 6 Details

Blueprints is a visual scripting tool used in UE4 and UE5 that allows creators to make games without having to learn native coding languages like C++, and has proven to be a great starting point for aspiring game developers.

While Blueprints has its merits, the Unreal Engine team says they firmly believe that Verse is the best option for both new and experienced programmers, saying, “Verse will be a powerful and capable way to create a meaningful game.”

Unreal Engine posted to X this morning to explain how the transition from Blueprints to Verse will happen, stating that Blueprints will still be supported in Early Access and the first UE6 release, but will no longer receive upgrades and will eventually be removed.

Although UE6 may feel unfamiliar to some at first, the Unreal team explains, “Verse draws ideas from functional, logical, and important languages, and should feel familiar immediately to anyone who has worked with languages like Python or C#. But it also has some unique features, aimed at solving the complex and scalable problems of modern game development—starting with its unique model of software conversion.”

This is where the divide begins, as not everyone is excited about learning a new coding language. Game developer, and X user @ZaliasFGC, says, “LLMs can’t generate blueprints, so that’s why you’re removing the best feature in Unreal that every other engine was trying to replicate? I don’t understand this decision from a developer’s point of view. It probably won’t happen again, genAI doesn’t see 2027/8.”

While some may be sad to see Blueprints end in time, others say the Unreal Engine has been a long time in development. Beautiful Light game director Eric ‘@aherys’ Rajot says, “Am I the only one who enjoyed seeing the blueprint taken down? It’s rubbish, only useful for reproducing very small text. It’s less readable than scripting. Rubbish for expansion/maintenance, rubbish for readability. The only benefit is… this is shiny rather than a beginner’s scar.”

While Blueprints has its advantages, the Unreal Engine team says they firmly believe that Verse is the best option for both new and experienced programmers.

The transition from Blueprints to Verse is big, but it doesn’t stop there. Here’s a breakdown of the three main changes coming to UE6:

  • Switching from Blueprints to Verse.

  • Content, code, and economies will be made portable and usable across games to encourage more developer collaboration.

  • Adding AI integration features to be used as “creative and productive multipliers”

As for physical content, Unreal states Fortnite Cosmetics will be their first point of proof, and game creators will be able to use Fortnite clothes in the games they created, but they will also be able to create clothes in their games that will work in Fortnite.

Unreal Engine 6 wants you to offload tedious tasks to your AI assistant and focus on the creative parts of a project you love. This is a controversial topic in the gaming industry and the world at large, as artificial intelligence permeates every aspect of human life, but Unreal Engine says, “In UE6, we see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing an important role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need.”
