10 JRPGs That Hide Their Most Important Details in Easily Missed Dialogue

The JRPG genre is full of heavy-hitters like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales of, and many other franchises. It’s very popular. It’s also known for including tons of optional content in its games, from optional quest lines, character sessions, and dialogue, to all the optional characters you might miss if you don’t find them at the right time.

Most of the time, the optional content is a real choice, and it doesn’t change much about how the game ends or your understanding of the big story moments. Sometimes, however, JRPGs hide important story and character information behind easily missed, often optional, dialogue.

Routes in the Sky 1st Chapter

Every NPC Has Something To Add

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is filled with an incredible amount of new dialogue that pops up after every major event, greatly rewarding anyone who regularly visits the villages… and silently punishing those who don’t!

Some of the most important conversations include Professor Alba, whose chosen conversations foreshadow some of the game’s biggest revelations. Along with Alba, other NPCs have conversations that gradually form the core political context of Trails at the top of Sky FC. You can miss out on all of this if you only do the mandatory content, and it has a huge impact on how you view the story and its ongoing conflict.

Legends of the Abyss

Character Motivations Hidden Behind the Skit

Legends of the Abyss

Tales of the Lasha has a story whose main conflict is very character driven. You can’t fully understand what’s going on unless you understand the characters’ motivations, emotional reactions, and relationships. For example, the skits show Luke’s personal growth after the Akzeriusth tragedy.

Unfortunately, Tales of the Abyss uses a skit system where players can have short, optional conversations throughout the game. They happen after the events of the story, and when they enter certain areas. But they can also disappear if you go too far, and require players to stop, trigger them, and choose to look at them first. If you don’t have these conversations, you often don’t understand why the characters do things in the main story.

Tactics Ogre: Let’s Stick Together

Main Context You Only See When You Hire Missable Characters

PSP Tricks Ogre Let's Stick Together

Tactics Ogre: Let’s Hold Together is full of political complexity, but some of its depth is hidden behind the recruitment of selectable characters. These important character ideas add weight and nuance to the world and story, but can often go completely unnoticed.

Cressida Obdilord can be missed because she is a character of her own choosing, but her conversations reveal important truths about the setting that change the players’ view of the core moral conflict, presenting it from the perspective of the people who suffered during the war. And when I say “optional,” I mean it: his recruitment depends on following a specific path through the game that most players will never follow unless they specifically aim for it.

Final dream VII

The Hidden History of Kafu and Zack

Final Fantasy VII has a few moments where we learn important story information from random NPCs or hacked dialogue, but the biggest one is during the Shinra Mansion Basement sequence.

When we leave Nibelheim, we don’t have to stay away. We can go back to the basement of Shinra Mansion to watch the optional scene. When we do, we find out that Cloud’s memories of Nibelheim are wrong, and that some of the things Cloud thinks he did were actually done by Zack Fair. If we don’t go there, we don’t learn about the Cloud identity problem or the changed memories until much later. This important information provides so much story and character clues that it changes the way we see Cloud and Zack.

Legends of Symphonia

Who is Virginia, Anyway?

Legends of the Symphonia party

Tales of Symphonia unlocks an excellent reveal behind the optional content. In Tales of Symphonia, you have two main characters, Raine and Genis. They’re an integral part of the plot from start to finish, so it’s not like we’re lacking opportunities to find things with them.

The problem is that there are things that even they don’t know – like the circumstances surrounding their family and why their mother disappeared. This is a big part of their identity, as Raine believes they were outcasts because they were half-elves and therefore a burden. His sense of self and identity is bound up in all of this. But finding their mother is not easy, as you have to travel to a place of your choice in the game with limited time available. This easily missed sequence of events reveals that Raine and Genis are directly connected to the wider conflict between humans and half-elves, giving context to their role in the story.

Star Ocean: The Second Story

Secret Actions Hide Personal Details and Motives

Claude Kenni From the Hero Selection Screen in Star Ocean - Story Two

Star Ocean 2’s crew members aren’t just combat units, but many of their features are locked behind optional or hidden interactions that take place outside of the main plot. There is a large amount of important characters, background, and story information hidden behind the game’s Secret Action system. The Private Action program of Star Ocean 2 features dialogues about personal conflicts, relationships, character motivations, revealing important aspects of the crew members’ personalities.

Some details about characters like Dias and Ashton don’t appear in the main story, for example. Scenes can affect relationship values, character interactions, and endings, but they’re optional, dependent on team composition and location, and are very easy to ignore.

Valkyrie profile

You are missing the Real End

Valkyrie profile

Valkyrie’s profile has many endings, and the default ending leaves many questions unanswered. Ending A reveals the true identity of the main character Lenneth, explains the main conflicts in the play, and provides a full resolution to the narrative. The problem is, getting to the hidden Ending A requires you to have certain conversations and meet NPCs or complete certain events in the game.

It’s not at all clear what you have to do to get to the actual ending, so it’s possible to finish what you think is the full game, and still not get the proper ending because you didn’t talk to certain people at the right time.

Person 4 Gold

End-Game Story Content Gated After Optional Conversations

Persona 4 Golden Marie Social Link

In Persona 4 Golden, the most important piece of optional story content is unlocked through Marie’s Aeon Social link. Unlike the original Persona 4, Golden’s Marie is a character whose full story is unlocked by players who choose to spend time with her directly on Social Link. These optional interviews are timed, too.

Marie’s Social Link content reveals her true identity and unlocks end-of-year story content that expands the game’s mystery and brings special endings. The thing is, you can’t finish the game without seeing Marie’s optional items, without knowing about the big pieces of the game’s lore.

Fire Sign: Path of Light

Characters Stories and Motivations

Gamecube Fire Emblem Path of Radiance

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is a tactical JRPG that features various “Support” conversations involving party members and characters that reveal some really impactful information about various characters. They know it too. These are separate scenes that are unlocked through character interactions instead of the obligatory story progression, so you don’t miss them. In Soren’s case, these conversations reveal a lot of secrets, such as Branded, his connections with the beorc and laguz communities, and the whole reason for his isolation and bitter character.

The problem is that, since these conversations require a large investment to open – you use compatible characters together, to accumulate support points, and choose them when they are available – you can miss most of them. Soren’s identity influences how he views the setting, his relationships with other characters, his role in the story, and how he relates to the world. It’s a really big part of his character, and you won’t understand it without the dialogue he chooses. And Soren is not the only example! Stefan, Jill, Ike and Mist… many of the characters rely on their chosen dialogues to fully understand them and their role in the story.

Final dream VI

What Do You Mean Dignity Matters?

ff6 opening

In Final Fantasy VI, Shadow is a member of a mysterious group that wanders and is an assassin. He’s an optional character that can’t be missed in most parts of the game, and even when he joins your party, he can die if you don’t wait for him.

He also has optional secret dreams that you can watch while you’re resting at the inn while he’s at the party. Dreams are not just background information. They completely recast who he is and why he even exists – they go into detail about who he was, his past relationships, and the traumatic events that made him who he is today. Without understanding these events, you can’t really understand Shadow as a character, or his motivations in the story.
