Method of Sword Changes Release Date

Don’t even try to hide it: we all know that whenever we hear news about the release calendar of a highly anticipated game, our minds immediately turn to the impact.

This is because, these days, we are more used to reading lengthy corporate apologies about sudden delays or unexpected production setbacks. Yes, we totally understand when a game really needs more time in the oven to reach its true potential – after all, no one wants a product that’s rushed or makes developers cringe.

However, it seems so Capcom likes to catch the whole community by surprise, it brings real good news to action-RPG fans: the long-awaited return of the Onimusha franchise is actually coming much sooner than we all expected.

From Vice City?

The Japanese publisher recently announced a major shake-up of the Onimusha: The Way of the Sword. Instead of launching on its previously scheduled date of September 25, the upcoming dark fantasy samurai adventure has had its release window pushed forward by a full three weeks.

This means that the game is officially locked for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. on September 4, 2026. The exact reason for the sudden change, however, has not been officially disclosed.

“The swordplay is now hitting its mark a few weeks earlier than expected, so players can jump into battle and focus on the long-awaited return of the Onimusha series,” reads Capcom’s official press release.

While the three-week shift may seem like a minor administrative adjustment on paper (I mean, the developers didn’t even give a single reason why), players are already speculating that there is a strategic reason behind the move. And its name is Grand Theft Auto 6, which was launched on November 19.

So maybe Onimusha just wants to keep his sword away from Vice City out of humanity. Because let’s face it: being a comfortable number of weeks away from the most anticipated game of the decade definitely feels a lot better than releasing anywhere near its culturally critical explosion point.

The game is now officially locked in for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4, 2026.

However, the move to a new spot on the calendar means that Onimusha will now find themselves rubbing shoulders with the exclusive crowd for early September releases.

Its new release date of September 4 puts it after that Dawnwalker bloodthe highly anticipated dark fantasy action-RPG from Wolves of Rebellion (a new studio led by the former director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt). On the same day, Switch 2 owners will also be diving into it Orbitalsan action-packed co-op platformer focused on rescuing survivors from a destroyed station that looks like it could be the next It Takes Two.

On top of that, Onimusha: Way of the Sword arrives just days before its September 8th launch Halloween: The Gamea survival horror title with a strong story and multiplayer modes. It’s certainly a busy week, but the samurai shouldn’t have trouble holding their own against the competition, it seems.

If you’re eagerly anticipating Onimusha: Path of the Sword like me and celebrating this update, it’s good to remember that a free-to-play demo of the game is already live on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. So you can easily get a glimpse of the next chapter of Capcom’s samurai to warm you up before the big day!
