While we may still be waiting for the highly anticipated Beastmaster class, after a long hiatus, due to FFXIV’s 7.45 content update, Varian Dungeons has finally made a spectacular return to Dawntrail with The Merchant’s Tale. This colorful iteration in the saga of the Variant Dungeons game brings many routes and stories for players to explore. Of course, there’s a treasure trove of prizes too, from upgrades to glam to extra Triple Triad cards.

How to Unlock a Different Dungeon of the Merchant Legend in Final Fantasy 14
The Merchant’s Tale is the latest iteration of Variant Dungeons in FFXIV thanks to the game’s Patch 7.45 update, and the first to receive a systematic overhaul of how Varian Dungeons will work going forward.
To unlock The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon, start by understanding the Old Sharlayan. Note that you need to start and finish ‘Endwalker’ Level 90 Main Scenario Quest and make sure you are familiar with the named NPC Osmonagain Elder Sharlayan at (X:11.9, Y:13.3).
Teleport to the Old Sharlayan main aetheryte, then run south up the stairs to the Peristyle at (X:12.0,Y:13.3) to talk to it Shallow Moor and take Section 90 of the ‘Spell Reading’ quest. This will show a scene where you find a new friend named Y’nazqha, who turns out to be Y’shtola’s younger sister.
After the two of you get to know each other, go and meet him again at his place of residence at Journey’s End on the east side of town. Talk to him to trigger another cutscene, where his assistant reveals a book that leads to the real world of the Merchant’s Tale. Soon, the two of you will be teleported to the home of a fictional character known as the Fair Maiden.
After the next cutscene and a brief objective to investigate the room, a new Varian Dungeon will open up. You can line it directly from the Fair Maiden’s room, or feel free to go back to Old Sharlayan using the green ceiling on the wall next to Y’nazqha and the dungeon line is far away.
How to Enter a Different Dungeon of the Merchant’s Tale in Final Fantasy 14
If you don’t enter The Merchant’s Tale Variant Dungeon directly from the portal in the Fair Maiden’s room, you can go IV&C Dungeon Finder menu, located under the Activity tab on your dashboard. A small menu will then appear (seen above), and this is where you can enter a row for any Unique Dungeon you’ve opened, and Merchant’s Tale should show as the fourth option.
You can also configure your two Unique Actions in this menu. These are special skills that you can only use in this Unique Dungeon, and can give you a leg up when dealing with mobs and/or bosses, so choose the ones that work best for your role and/or your team.
How to Enter The Merchant’s Tale Advanced and Criterion Dungeon in Final Fantasy 14
The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon is an example where you only fight bosses in any way you choose. You can also decide to fight just one boss or all of them after successfully defeating each one. The more bosses you defeat, the more loot you will be entitled to.
To install The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon, you first need to fulfill the following requirements:

Complete the request ‘Spellbinding Read’ (made after completing the variant Dungeon at least once)

Level 100 combat role required (760 minimum ilvl)

Defeat three different bosses at the end of all the different routes in the Varian Dungeon
Once you’ve fulfilled these requirements, talk to the named NPC Memolivia at (X:11.9, Y:13.3), standing next to Osmon. They will open The Merchant’s Tale Advanced Dungeon for you, and you should see its option listed as available under the ‘Advanced/Criterion’ tab of the V&C Dungeon finder.
If you complete the Advanced Dungeon, you can repeat the queue The Merchant’s Tale Criterion Dungeonwhich is the most difficult of the three versions. This is also a boss rush, but it’s necessary complete all three bosses in orderand more challenging mechanics.
To unlock the Criterion Dungeon, go talk to Osmon, and the option should appear in your V&C Dungeon finder.
