How to play Recon in Marathon

Whether you want to avoid conflict and focus on looting, or trying to impress a certain group with your PvP skills, the Marathon recon shell has the tools you need to stay one step ahead of your enemies.

Recon is an intel specialist, fully equipped with threat detection technology such as a sonar system and tracking aircraft, but knowing how to fully utilize this shell can take some trial and error.

In a cut-throat shooter like this, your survival doesn’t just depend on being quick to draw, accurate, and calm under pressure, it also requires a lot of strategic thinking.

In this guide, I will show you how to use Recon skills at the most opportune times to maximize their effectiveness, and become a true master of strategy.

Recon skills, explained

Echo Pulse (Prime): Activate your shell’s advanced detection systems, releasing a series of sonar pulses that reveal the location of nearby enemies.

Tracker Drone (Tactical): Unleash a mechanical microbot that tracks down nearby enemies and explodes, severely burning any targets caught in the blast.

Investigation (Feature): If you’ve pinged a hostile runner, you automatically get an alert on your shell’s HUD. Making an end in the runner is killing their team.

Stalker Protocol (Feature): After breaking the target’s shield, they leave a continuous holographic trail for a short time.

The recon shell is perfect for any play style, giving players the ability to find their opponents in PvP, or avoid detection and loot quietly while knowing exactly where threats are hiding.

Recon strategies

Recon’s tactical skill, the tracker drone (seen above), may be one of the smartest skills currently in the game as it can be used in many different situations.

Use your drone to help clear the UESC’s power (seen above), but only when absolutely necessary. Knowing when you can use your skills, and when you should save yourself the most important time, it is a very valuable skill.

While Recon’s drone is great at dealing with AI, it shines best when chasing down unlucky runners. If you are fighting a group inside a building, send the drone first and let it do the dirty work for you.

This is the best time to use the Recon ability, as it will devastate your opponents with damage and crowd control, stopping easy kills for your team.

Recon’s main ability, Echo Pulse, sends out seven sonar waves that will mark enemies around you with a red dot, as seen in the image above.

In this situation, we were ambushed by a group and I quickly engaged with Echo Pulse, which quickly revealed the locations of our attackers and gave my group a chance to jump.

Avoiding ambushes may be the best time to activate your sonar system, but it can also be used in aggressive games when you’re tracking a group, and it’s time to pinpoint their location.

Best Team Composition

The shell of a combat specialist, the destroyer, is loaded with tools that make it a complete beast in combat, but there’s one thing missing that makes it unstoppable—Intel.

Pairing destroyer and reconnaissance shells together brings the phrase ‘search and destroy’ to life, as recon sonar and tracking technology allows the destroyer to focus on one thing, and one thing only, to destroy.

When the group is close, activate the Recon sonar, use your drone (and your destroyer) and get into support position.

While the destroyer acts automatically on Recon’s intel, like a dog chasing the scent of spicy meat, the triage is ready to mend their wounds and keep them in the fight when things get hairy.

The trick of the three is to provide the destroyer with everything they need to get the job done. Triage brings a huge amount of stability in the form of fast regeneration and med-drone healing and is easily one of the most impactful shells in the game.
