Activision Admits It Killed the Wrong War Back in 2020

Call of Duty: Warzone recently introduced a new mode called Black Ops Royale, where players come into each game armed only with a gun and a wingsuit.

This new mode is inspired by the first Call of Duty battle, Blackout, which arrived alongside Black Ops 4 in 2018, and quietly became the most popular BR Call of Duty ever made.

Call of Duty Admits Defeat and Changes Release Structure After Black Ops 7

The developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 have released a statement promising to do better in future installments and to stop releasing this year.

Two years later, Activision killed it. There was no farewell, no final update, just a bit of silence for an abandoned game – and betting the entire franchise on Warzone.

It worked for a while. Then it didn’t happen. Warzone player stats dropped, fatigue set in, and cracks began to appear.

Now in 2026, Activision has launched Black Ops Royale – a mode that their official blog describes as “the evolution of Blackout” – rebuilt with the same DNA, working with the same philosophy, carrying the same spirit.

Blackout, which came alongside Black Ops 4 in 2018, quietly became the most popular BR Call of Duty ever made.

They’ve given it a new name and a new map, but make no mistake. This is a revival, not a revolution. And somewhere in between that launch announcement, Activision quietly admitted something they’d never say out loud – they killed the wrong war.

But now, Blackout is back. Black Ops Royale has no loading, gulag, or shopping stations, and players must search for weapons and upgrade them through rare stages by finding and using attachments.

The activation did not skip tasks, as players will be able to capture UAV transmissions swept and recycled, strong boxes, good hunting, and expose hordes of zombies to reveal rare loot.

This new mode takes place on the large Avalon map, where it appears that 100 players may not be enough to fill it, as some players have suggested that the size of the lobby should be increased from 100 to 150.
