Shigeru Miyamoto has some bad news for Super Smash Bros. fans, as he has dismissed the idea of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe and the possibility of a crossover movie.
Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie was very much its own thing. While it included many references to classic Nintendo franchises, the characters and locations remained firmly within Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong universes.

The recent reveal that Pikmin and Fox McCloud are appearing in The Mario Galaxy Movie has fans excited about the prospect of standalone Nintendo movies, including a Super Smash Bros. movie. Unfortunately, this won’t happen anytime soon, as Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed to Polygon that a crossover film is not in the cards.
Miyamoto Shoots Down Smash Bros. Movie
When asked about the prospect of a Super Smash Bros. movie, Miyamoto shrugged it off, saying“Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’re going to have a situation. [where] all Nintendo characters will join.”
This was confirmed by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, who said, “When you use the word universe, it gives me this idea that there’s a bunch of really smart people in a room with charts on the wall and they’re planning the next 10 years of how all the characters might go in and out of the movies. Our process is actually quite different from that. It’s mostly directed at discussions about what would be fun in a certain scene of a movie.“
It seems that Pikmin and Fox’s appearances are only meant to be cameos, with the potential of upcoming films further down the line. However, it’s not a good plan, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where the goal is for individual projects to lead to one big movie.
