Seattle indie hit ‘Stardew Valley’ is coming to ‘Magic: The Gathering’ – GeekWire

One of the biggest hits ever produced by Seattle’s independent video game scene is joining Magic: Encounter various later this month. Kind of.

magic, is a long-running collectible card game published and developed by Renton, Wash.-based Wizards of the Coast, often releasing special crossover editions with the Secret Lair imprint.

Secret Lair “drops” are limited-edition collections that often reimagine old ones Magic cards with new designs and art, which take place Magicfamiliar characters of wizards and monsters, for example, Dwarf Fortress, Garfield, or various Marvel heroes. Caveat: Secret Lairs is priced to attract die-hard collectors, rather than casual players.

On Friday, on the first day of MagicCon Amsterdam, Wizards announced several upcoming “drops” of the Secret Lair, three of which are based on the popular indie video game. Stardew Valley.

stardew, made by one developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, is arguably one of the biggest success stories to come out of Seattle’s independent game development scene. An open-world video game about a young man who returns to his grandfather’s abandoned farm, to grow crops, raise livestock, make friends, fish, have fun with the nearby abandoned mines, and/or love neighbors. All of this can be taken at the player’s pace, without any specific time limits or directions.

A starThe success helped expand what has come to be known as the “cool” genre of cool, low-stress video games, along with other hits like Nintendo’s. Animal Crossing. A star celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year, has sold nearly 50 million copies across multiple platforms, and has gone on to have a successful concert tour, a cookbook, and as of earlier this month, a crochet book.

Now A star comes to Magic with the Secret Lair, in a package Wizards calls the “Superdrop of the Moonlight Jellies,” named after the city’s jellyfish festival. Stardew Valley.

Coming up on July 27, the drop is split into three sets of cards: Welcome to Stardew Valley, Life in Pelican Townagain Flicker in the Deep. First set, Welcome, features unique pixel art by ConcernedApe on each card.

Most of the cards in the Stardew Valley The Secret Lair is an existing print Magic cards, although some have been renamed in line with the theme. For example, Swords to Plowshares is one of the oldest cards Magicbut it gets new star-themed edition in this Secret Lair.

The only exception is the original Stardew Valley map (above), which is a special area designed to suit many competitive styles. Magic play.

Other upcoming Secret Lairs announced at MagicCon Amsterdam include:

  • a full play area based on the Japanese reality artist Hatsune Miku;
  • a food themed take on JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit;
  • four different Marvel Comics drops, including one that will feature the world’s biggest pets;
  • Three drops are built around specific artists, including American cartoonist Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese);
  • and more ironically, a themed drop based on French record label Lofi Girl, best known for its namesake 24-7 YouTube “radio station” and mascot.
