Will Artyom Be the Protagonist of Metro 2039?

After years of speculation, we’re finally getting a fourth entry in the Metro series, this time officially.
So far, all we have is the revealed date and a short teaser video with a watch, but that could give us more information than anything before.
Metro 2039 Revealed This Week
According to the post, 4A Games officially launched the next chapter of Metro on April 16, at 13:00 EDT. The new game, Metro 2039, already has a website where you can sign up for an email reminder.
Fans of the source will be happy to know that, at least at first glance, the author Dmitry Glukhovsky is always involved in this project.
Despite 4A Games being very different from the books after Metro 2033, Glukhovsky was involved in the writing process for all three installments, resulting in some of the most compelling and dark post-apocalyptic games ever made.
Another big partner in bringing Metro 2039 to life is Xbox, which will be hosting the show on its YouTube channel.
How Will Metro 2039 Be Different From Exodus?
Aside from taking place four years after the Spartans’ journey east aboard the Aurora, there is no official information about the setting or cast of Metro Exodus. However, events that have occurred since the last release in 2019 may have resulted in a dark theme and urban setting.
The big question on everyone’s mind is, will Artyom become the main character? Sure, four years is enough time to put together a new watch, but the one shown in the teaser doesn’t look like the watch used by Artyom or Anna in the previous games, while still having the same functions.

We’re not in Kansas anymore.
Another issue is whether it is worth continuing Artyom’s story. He and the Spartans didn’t forget about those who remained in Moscow, but given how deep the rot is in Russia’s ruined capital, what can a small group really change?
Personally, I would like to see a new character for a change. The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story DLCs showed how refreshing the Metro universe can be when seen from a new perspective.
Another big question is the tone of the game. Metro Exodus came out 7 years ago, but the world looks different today.
Artyom and the Spartans haven’t forgotten about those left in Moscow, but with the way the rot runs deep in Russia’s devastated capital, what can a small group really change?
The war in Ukraine often forces many developers to get close to the realities depicted in Metro, spending nights in bomb shelters, rationing food, and hiding from bombings in subway stations. Dmitry Glukhovsky, once a famous writer in Russia, is now a wanted man at home.
It’s hard to know exactly what kind of impact these realities will have on the game, but you can bet they will affect the setting and storytelling, as it’s almost impossible to get through this experience without being affected on some level.
Whatever fate is in store for the people of Metro 2039, we’ll be waiting in peace, preferably with a few gas mask filters to keep.
