Sony Patent Hints at Possible PS6 Cooling Changes

Sony has reportedly just filed a patent for a new sealed liquid cooling system that will likely replace liquid metal in the upcoming PlayStation 6. The new cooling system is designed to reduce the risk of leaks, improve thermal efficiency for extended game sessions, and create stable temperatures that allow the PS6 to be placed in both vertical and horizontal orientations without problems.

The patent describes a closed liquid evaporation system that controls the circulation of liquid through heat pipes. These pipes will have flexible and flexible parts designed to ensure that the console can be placed safely in any position without the risk of overheating or causing problems with the liquid metal.

The old models of PS5 had problems when they were placed in a vertical position for a long time, which led to the formation of an imbalance of liquid metal and a small connection between the heatsink and the chip, and Sony used a hardware update in the PS5 Pro and the PlayStation Slim CFI-2116, but the new sealed water system should solve this problem forever.

As reported by Spazio Games, the patent describes the design of a new cooling system, which uses heat pipes to create a uniform distribution of liquid and effective cooling regardless of where you choose to place the console.

To combat the effects of gravity, these heat pipes will be fitted with extensions that will lower the liquid level when the console changes shape, allowing the evaporation process to continue releasing heat.

The new cooling system is designed to (…) allow the PS6 to be placed in both vertical and horizontal orientations without problems.

The PlayStation 6 is still a mystery, but there are a few clues that players are following. With the release date coming, RAMaggedon has caused concern as to when Sony will choose to release the PS6, with some reports suggesting that we won’t be seeing the PS6 until 2028, maybe even 2029.

Another pressing question is what price point will the PS6 be set at? With the Steam Machine hitting the market for over a thousand dollars, and the Switch 2, XBOX Series X, and PS5 all getting price hikes recently, it’s likely that the PS6 will be priced somewhere in the $800–$1000 range.

To the dismay of many collectors, the end of an era has come as Sony recently revealed that they will no longer be making game discs, meaning that the PS6 will be digital only, starting in January 2028.

While Sony says the decision to stop disc production is based on consumer trends, saying, “This change will enable us to align more closely with how the majority of our community prefers to access and play games today,” a petition to save PlayStation’s media quickly gained over 100,000 signatures.

It’s not just about collecting games and feeling like you own them; halting the production of video game discs will affect thousands of people. Many retailers, manufacturers, and distributors will feel the effects of this shift in digital media, while small businesses that use traditional games as their bread and butter are likely to be hit hard.

The petition aims to stop Sony from ending physical game production and allow gamers the opportunity to continue collecting, donating, and reselling game discs, regardless of the company’s new digital vision for the future.
