After the success of their open world game Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss said their company’s strategy has changed dramatically, and they recently sold CCP Games to CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursso.

CCP Games, the studio behind space survival games EVE Online, and EVE Frontier, was acquired by Pearl Abyss in 2018 for $225 million, with performance-related fees worth $200 million, but the rapid evolution of the gaming industry has led the Crimson Desert studio to reevaluate their investment.
Pearl Abyss Sells CCP Games Eight Years After Acquisition
Pearl Abyss is reported to have sold CCP for 100 million coins, and the rights to receive 20 million tokens, when it arrived, it seems like a bad return on investment, but the finer details surrounding the token part of the deal are unclear.
The token rights included in the agreement reportedly refer to EVE Frontier’s in-game currency called EVE Tokens ($EVE), and CCP Games says these are “utility tokens” that will power the player-driven economy for decades to come.
With the news of this sale and the success of Crimson Desert, it is possible that Pearl Abyss is lining their pockets to further the development of brand new games.
Although the investment made sense at the time, Pearl Abyss says “after evaluating various growth strategies over the long term, we have concluded that selling the company to its current management is in the best interest of both parties’ future.”
The two companies are reportedly still open to working together in the future, but CCP is currently finalizing a change in ownership. Pearl Abyss explains, “While the acquisition was a logical decision at the time to secure global IP and diversify our portfolio, the global games business environment and our company’s priorities have changed significantly since then.”
Pearl Abyss may be lining their pockets to further the development of brand new games.
After selling more than five million copies of Crimson Desert in one month, and selling out CCP, Pearl Abyss will no doubt be looking to keep the momentum going and use their resources to develop more titles.
