Blizzard Takes Action Against Another Secret WoW Server As A Regular Announcement+ Feels Close

Blizzard Entertainment has been busy handing out cease and desist notices for quite some time now.

Last year, the company began to take action against Turtle WoW, a popular private server that brings the “vanilla WoW” experience with new content. Blizzard would win their case, resulting in the closing of Turtle WoW.

They are now headed to another secret server, Project Ascension. Earlier this month, Blizzard sued the creators of Project Ascension. Last week, they escalated matters by introducing a subpoena request.

“A case has been filed against you,” the lawsuit continues, indicating that the creators of Project Ascension have 21 days to respond. “If you fail to respond, a default judgment will be entered for the relief sought in the complaint.”

Blizzard Has A History Of Shutting Down Private WoW Servers

Blizzard Has A History Of Shutting Down Private WoW Servers

This is far from the first time a World of Warcraft developer has taken action against private servers. In the past, they have participated in legal battles against the creators of Nostralius, which began in 2015 until 2016, holding legacy content that focuses more on the original experience of World of Warcraft.

Its popularity led Blizzard to invite the creators of Nostralius to Blizzard HQ. The company will also announce official Classic World of Warcraft servers at BlizzCon 2017 before launching two years later.

With Blizzard’s focus on additional “Classic+” private servers for World of Warcraft, that adds more fuel to the fire with the official announcement of Classic+ at BlizzCon later this year. In fact, it’s something the company revealed earlier this year.

When the company launched the State of Azeroth 2026, Holly Longdale, executive producer of World of Warcraft, was “preparing” to make a statement before being interrupted: “I can say with confidence that all Classic players around the world have a lot to look forward to. I am happy to announce…” Everyone fully expects this to be Classic+.

Turtle WoW’s Legal Issues May Mean Blizzard Is Finally Giving Players More of What They Want

World of Warcraft’s custom server is getting hammered by Blizzard, so the future of WoW custom content may change forever.

The Classic WoW community is alive and well

Meanwhile, Classic WoW fans are doing everything they can to engage with their favorite game.

The Mists of Pandaria expansion was recently released for Siege of Orgrimmar, but unfortunately, the joy of the Mists has ended due to Blizzard’s mishandling of the expansion. On the other hand, Burning Crusade is doing very well as it continues its Anniversary release.

In addition, the first player’s latest live-action remake Season of Discovery has just been launched, causing buzz and excitement in the air. For those who don’t know, Season of Discovery is a version of the classic World of Warcraft that introduces modern spells and abilities, new raids based on classic locations (Blackfathom Depths, Gnomeregan, and the new Scarlet Enclave raid), and new class roles, too, like the Warlock tank.

With Blizzard’s focus on additional “Classic+” private servers for World of Warcraft, that adds more fuel to the fire with the official announcement of Classic+ at BlizzCon later this year.

For many, this was the Classic+ version they were waiting for, but, sadly, it’s a limited-time event. Sure, the servers are still there, but it was up to the players to take full advantage of that.

There is more hope for the official Classic+ servers following recent visits from World of Warcraft streamers to Blizzard HQ. While they’ve been tight-lipped about things, it sounds like all signs point to the long-awaited Classic+ World of Warcraft announcement at BlizzCon 2026 later this year.
