Discovery Education Introduces Social Studies Essentials, A New K–5 Program That Brings Inquiry-Based Learning to the Elementary Classrooms

Based on the C3 Framework, with classroom-ready lessons, instructional support, and embedded literacy strategies to help students learn history and social studies.

Charlotte, NC (Wednesday, July 8, 2026) – Today, Discovery Education was released Essentials of Social Studiesa new K–5 supplemental program designed to provide teachers with ready-to-use lessons and built-in support that reduces planning time while making strong social studies instruction engaging for students. Essentials of Social Studies is now available for use in states across the United States.

Backed by research and based on the C3 Framework, Essentials of Social Studies helps students investigate real places, people, and events across history, geography, society, and economics through compelling primary sources, embedded multimedia, and inquiry-driven activities. Lessons emphasize reading comprehension, vocabulary, conversation, and writing. Editable slides, step-by-step guidance, scaffolding, and teacher score bases give teachers time to step back and focus on instruction, not lesson preparation.

“A strong social studies education helps young students understand their communities and see themselves as active participants in the world around them,” said Brian Shaw, CEO of Discovery Education. “Essentials of Social Studies makes it possible to bring that kind of education to elementary classrooms every day with engaging, teachable lessons that give teachers time to come back. As students return to school after celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday this summer, we’re giving teachers the tools to turn that curiosity into real questions, meaningful questions, and lifelong learning.”

Discovery Education is advanced Essentials of Social Studies based on teacher feedback with a clear goal: to make rigorous, inquiry-based social studies instruction accessible to teachers and students.
