Final Fantasy XIV Will Be The Greatest 2 Switch Game Ever

Final Fantasy XIV is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in August, and fans had better start clearing games now, as Eorzea’s file size and beyond will make it one of the largest on the system and will only grow larger over time.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is technologically advanced enough to handle modern Final Fantasy games, which means titles like Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch day one on the platform. The problem is that the latest Square Enix titles tend to have large file sizes, often clocking in at over 100 GB, due to their triple quality visuals eating up storage space.

Square Enix announced at the Final Fantasy XIV Berlin Fan Festival that the Nintendo Switch 2 version will be launched on August 4, 2026. Those eager to take a trip to Eorzea will have to start planning their final destination, as Stealth40k has stated on Twitter/X that the Switchch 2 port of Final Fantasy 11 is a system close to 7 GB.

Final Fantasy XIV Almost Hits 120 GB In Switch 2 (And Counting)

The 117 GB file size is terrifying, and it’s only going to get bigger. In January 2027, the Evercold expansion of Final Fantasy XIV will be launched on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, which will add a brand new storyline to a different world. Evercold adds two new missions, as well as overhauling the combat system, adding an Evolved Mode for all character classes that changes the way they work, so it will be a great DLC.

Nintendo Switch 2 players always have the option to increase their internal storage, but that is a very expensive prospect, considering that the system only uses MicroSD Express cards, which are expensive, even at a low level. This means that anyone who wants to play Final Fantasy XIV will have to make some tough decisions if they want it on the Nintendo Switch 2, otherwise, they will be downloading and deleting stuff all the time.

There is one major advantage to playing Final Fantasy XIV on the Nintendo Switch 2 over the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and that is the portability factor. Anyone who wants to play Final Fantasy XIV on the go and doesn’t want to get a mortgage to pay for a Steam Deck can do so, as long as they don’t mind the small UI.

The problem with Final Fantasy XIV’s file size is that the game will grow over time, even between expansions, as it releases regular updates that add dungeons and story quests. Then again, it’s not just Square Enix games that will cause this issue, as the Nintendo Switch 2 can handle much larger games than its predecessor, meaning the problem will be even worse for those who like third-party releases.

The industry’s gradual shift to natural resources means Nintendo Switch 2 players may want to bite the bullet and invest in additional storage, or it may be wise to wait a few years until the price of MicroSD Express cards (hopefully) drops. Until then, anyone who wants to create a Warrior of Light and move on to Eorzea will have to make some tough decisions about which other games to keep.
