Let’s take a look at the unique mechanics of this battle, and some of the best ways to bring this monster back to the lab!
Meeting Mechanics
One of the first things you’ll notice about the Test Subject (besides its random name) is that, once you kill it, it will sprout a new head with 100 more hit points. This happens twice during the fight, that is Ascension 0, you need to deal with the context 600 for life.
That doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Well, unfortunately, that’s not all this multi-headed monstrosity has to offer. Each class has its own unique buff:
-
In Section 1, the Test Subject will be Get angrygiving you +2 Strength every time you perform an ability.
-
Phase 2 has it A Painful Stabcausing a wound every time a Test Subject deals unblocked damage.
-
Section 3 has The intangible every other chance. Intangible monsters will only take 1 damage per time. You may remember this Nemesis machine from Slay the Spire 1.
The first 2 stages are pretty easy to deal with, but it’s the third one that increases the difficulty. This portable device will do this section twice as longseeing that you can’t do it to scratch every other chance. This means you need to heavy blast damage when it’s tangible, too good defenses to keep yourself alive when it is not visible.
Boss Strategies
Before we get to what actually works, there are a few properties that can be difficult with this manager. Certain decks that rely on building a lot of debuffs, like Poison and Doom, will struggle with this boss. They are usually better against enemies with one large health pool.
If the Test Subject enters a new section, you will lose all these problems you put into it, basically that means you’ll need to start from scratch.

Instead, it’s better to go with a more defensive structure, as this battle can last a long time. Frost orbs, Barricade, Afterimage, Reanimateand other defensive options can be very helpful here.
Check out the powerful relics the Ancients provide. Certain relics like the Jeweled Mask, Storybook and Jewelery Box can give your desk a lot of power!
If you are not a very defensive player, building a hitter would be great. Anything that scales over time is good, too! Demon Form Ironclads, Sovereign Blade Regents, again Apply focused Necrobinders it won’t be a big problem here.
If you pair these properties with I’m in danger and generating decent power, you’ll have each of these categories down before they become a threat. Blast damage is the name of the game here.
