Jurassic Park, cybersecurity and the dangerous myth of control

This is where resilience starts to become an engineering problem rather than a compliance exercise.

When the recovery hypothesis fails

Because the real question is no longer, “How fast can we restore the app?”

The real question is, “What if we can’t get you back?”

Jurassic Park repeatedly explored this scenario. The real panic didn’t start when the fence failed. It started when drivers realized they couldn’t regain control fast enough.

Businesses now face the same risk.

What happens if AWS experiences a long outage? What happens if Azure Identity Services fails globally? What if Stripe, Salesforce, Slack, or Microsoft 365 disappeared for days instead of hours?

Most organizations don’t actually have business continuity strategies for those situations.

They have thoughts of giving back.

Twenty years ago, most organizations directly managed large portions of their operational stacks. Today, companies increasingly hire business-critical capabilities from a small number of suppliers.

Ownership. Infrastructure. Communications. Payments. Cooperation. Customer services.

The benefits of efficiency are enormous.

So is the risk of torture.

Sustainability as an engineering discipline

Historically, business continuity planning has assumed local disruption. The building burned down. The regional data center has failed. A storm hit the office. The Internet itself was not a dependent entity.

Today, all businesses are built on a SaaS tightly coupled cloud ecosystem where operational survival depends on third parties remaining continuously available.

We’ve developed organizations to be more efficient, automated, integrated, and scalable.

It’s not really survival.

That’s why fitness needs to evolve beyond the annual tabletop exercises and static recovery programs.

True resilience is not a bond that sits on the shelf. It is not a once-a-year workshop. It is not a recovery document written against a location that has changed in the past six months.

It is a progressive understanding of nature itself.

It requires live telemetry, operational visibility, dependency awareness, continuous validation, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions.

Getting used to the chaos

The survivors of Jurassic Park only succeeded when they stopped pretending that nature was completely under their control and instead came to terms with the reality in front of them.

Cybersecurity needs to make a similar change.

Attackers will continue to adapt.

AI will be faster than most governance models can handle.

Complexity will continue to outpace our thinking about control.

The organizations that will survive will not be the ones with the tallest hedges. They will be the ones who understand their areas deeply enough to continue working when control is lost.

The goal was to end the chaos.

It was living long enough to adapt to it.

Because resilience is not about preventing chaos.

It’s about working with it.

Because eventually, somehow, life finds a way.
