UK technology service provider Logicalis is launching a private 5G service for Irish businesses, following an €8m investment from the company to support the rollout.
Private 5G spectrum has been enabled in Ireland following new regulatory changes introduced by ComReg, which, according to Logicalis, represents “one of the most significant developments” in digital infrastructure in recent years.
These local networks can be adapted to suit specific needs and allow businesses to take full advantage of the 5G spectrum, with low latency connections to large operational sites.
Access to private 5G is a “transformational development” for Ireland, Logicalis said. The technology supports new generation connected activities such as robotics, industrial AI, autonomous vehicles, IoT devices and edge computing.
Irish businesses can use technology to accelerate digital automation, AI and Industry 4.0 initiatives, the company says, while strengthening its competitiveness as a global investment destination.
Logicalis believes that private 5G will be the foundational technology that supports the next generation of connected business operations. The company provides its private 5G services in partnership with technology vendors, including Cisco, Nokia and Neutral Wireless.
It said the solution includes network architecture, radio planning, deployment, security and integration, and fully managed services. It already offers private 5G spectrum across the UK, Europe and North America.
“Historically, businesses wishing to deploy private 5G have had to rely on mobile operators as spectrum was not directly available to the industry,” said Frank Rubotham, head of technology and proposition at Logicalis’ UK and Ireland operations.
“This framework has created complexity and cost barriers to access this technology. Now, with the industry’s access to private 5G spectrum, the technology has moved from the experimental stage to full-scale production deployment.
“At Logicalis, we have been investing and researching extensively in this technology for over 10 years, while deploying large private 5G networks in markets such as the UK, Germany and the US, ensuring we have the technology to deliver truly transformative technology.”
The company is part of Datatec and operates throughout Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific and Africa. It last reported annual revenue of $1.7bn.
“This development, in real terms, means we can build and deliver private 5G networks to Irish businesses that support mass automation, edge computing, industrial AI, robotics and real-time data analytics,” added Rubotham.
