The same was true of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, possibly to an even greater extent, with countless references that ended up diminishing the story.

It makes sense that fans of the Mario Franchise are the ones who push their heads against older games. They are the ones who grew up around classic Nintendo titles and saw the meme and fan culture that grew up around them.
