The Gathering – Arena development team announces that it has successfully merged – GeekWire

Based video game developers Magic: Encounter announced on Tuesday that they had successfully joined the unions, following a petition filed with the US National Labor Relations Board.
The United Wizards of the Coast, in partnership with the Communication Workers of America, represents the development team Magic: The Gathering – Arena. Made in-house at Wizards of the Coast in Renton, Wash., The platform is an online adaptation of the long-running collectible card game.
UWOTC previously announced on June 2 that it had begun official NLRB elections for its union’s recognition, with in-person voting beginning that day. Now that the union has been formally appointed by the NLRB, its next step is to seek a guaranteed contract.
The union’s stated goals include seeking layoff protections; addressing Hasbro’s mandate for the necessary use of AI; dealing with wage conflicts; maintaining the option to work remotely after Hasbro issued a mandate to return to the office; explanations about the side projects of workers; and transparency about career progression and pay scales.
According to the official UWOTC website, the union is made up of about 100 workers in Washington state and elsewhere.
UWOTC previously announced its union efforts at the end of April, initially prompted by the surprise wave of Hasbro layoffs that affected Scholars on Dec. 2023, despite the Wizards overall having their most successful year on record. (2023 is, after all, a year Baldur’s Gate III he went out.)
The new union initially sought voluntary recognition from the Wizards by the May 1 deadline, but the Wizards did not issue a definitive answer. Instead, in late May, several The platform team members reported that the Wizards sent them numerous anti-union messages. Some sources noted that the Wizards are said to have hired a legal team known for opposing unionization efforts, which is a proposal.
When asked for comment, a Wizards representative pointed GeekWire to the company’s official statement, which was shared via LinkedIn.
GeekWire has contacted UWOTC for additional comment.
The platform free-to-play digital version Magic for Windows, MacOS, and mobile devices, it appeared to be fully released in September 2019. It works on a “freemium” model where players can play the game without any upfront costs, but have the option to get new virtual cards and in-game currency for real money.
According to official announcements from Hasbro, there were more than 13 million registered accounts The platform from 2023. At the time of writing, independent trackers like SteamCharts have logged just under 7,700 daily players The platform in the last 30 days, which is a respectable number for a modern live service game.
It’s worth noting that many of the problems that UWOTC was created to address are common, persistent issues in the video game industry, especially in the high-end, “AAA” sector. The last three years in sports have been marred by studio closures, waves of layoffs, allegations of toxic “hardcore behavior,” and mismanagement by executives, even though the industry itself is bigger and more popular than ever.
