Until Dawn 2 Makes for a Blank Title with a Mysterious Island Setting

In 2015, Sony got a little surprise on their hands when the special title Until Dawn of Supermassive Games went into the story, “choose your own journey”-type of horror and attracted a lot of players who were willing to try to find out how to save (or kill) all the characters in the game.

For those looking for a quick (but not cheap) scare.

Since then, Until Dawn has been successful enough to spawn a feature-length film, and Supermassive Games went on to launch the Dark Pictures Anthology to somewhat mixed, but healthy enough reception among most of their titles. With how busy Supermassive has been behind Kwaze Dawn, another sequel doesn’t seem to be on the horizon for its original title.

Today, June 2, 2026, PlayStation State of Play, viewers were shocked to see Until 2 on their YouTube broadcast in the back part of the show. And no, it’s not the oldest sequel title we’ve ever seen, but it does seem to change a lot of details. Here’s what we know so far, including the series now taking place in a completely different biome this time.

Until Dawn 2 heads to the beach

Surprisingly, Until Dawn 2 is powered by Firesprite instead of Supermassive. On the PlayStation front, Firesprite is probably best known for its well-received PVSR2 title, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. It will be very interesting to see how Firesprite is able to take up the mantle of Until Dawn now instead of Supermassive, who are now the same IP.

The First Until Dawn follows a group of young friends in an isolated cabin on a snowy mountain before, well… everything goes wrong. The game became famous for having many different outcomes for the characters in the story. It was possible to save everyone in the game from the horrors lurking in the dark, or you could cause everyone’s death, too.

Similarly, Until Dawn 2 adopted this same philosophy, which we see in the “Everyone can live, everyone can die” splash screen from the trailer. This time, however, your group of wannabe youth activists find themselves in a hot spot.

According to additional details provided by PlayStation Blog, our group of main playable characters are all working on a web show titled “Dead Truth,” where they pretend to be paranormal investigators and meet fake ghosts on stage to increase their online popularity. Now affiliated with a reality TV network, the stakes are raised, and they travel to a remote island, reportedly haunted and ancient to try to find new images of their delusional fandom.

It’s a stark contrast to the snowy, cold setting of the OG. In fact, the yin and yang here couldn’t be more different. In a way, this is interesting, as the “cabin in the woods” setting from the first one feels kind of similar, while the tropical island paradise is a less traveled horror. Interestingly, however, the trailer also features glimpses of Dr. Hill, Commentator of the first game, which means that the two experiences are at least directly connected in this one way.

It will be very interesting to see how Firesprite is able to take up the mantle of Until Dawn now instead of Supermassive, who are now the same IP.

While 2015’s Until Dawn ends up going in some unconventional directions, we’ve yet to see anything confirmed paranormal in the 2nd trailer, so it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Will our ghost hunters finally find what they’ve been pretending they’re hunting for all these years, or will the real world horrors prove to be too much for them to handle anyway?

Small Ways Out

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little longer for more details about this latest entry into the world of Until Dawn. So far, all we know is that it is scheduled to release sometime in 2027.

Firesprite says they will have more information coming out in the coming months, so we’ll have to wait and see what else they’re willing to show us in the near future.

Until then, start practicing your life and death decision making skills. Until Dawn 2 is closer than we thought before today, and we will have a hot, exciting new place to try to survive this time. Take sunscreen.

We Need More Midwestern Horror Games

There is a distinct gap in horror games (and just video games in general) happening in the American Midwest – a gap that needs to be filled.
