The developers recently took to social media to bombard fans of excited first-person shooters, officially shutting down a project that many feared would never see the light of day: Icon. The Complete Package Comes Sooner Than You Think
This announcement caught a lot of people by surprise, not only because of the amazing ports, but also because of how developers handle old content.
Unlike what Activision did with the controversial release of the remaster version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 back in 2020 (which took away the online elements to bring only a solo story), it seems that Treyarch is actually listening to the fans this time, as both games will come with their complete, incomplete original packages.
According to an official post from the Call of Duty account on X (formerly Twitter), players are getting the exact information they fell in love with ten years ago.
“It’s official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are shipping to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at Iron Galaxy,” reads the post, which concludes by confirming that both will include all original modes: The campaign, Many playersagain Zombies.
To make this conservation effort possible, Activision brought in logistics experts to The Iron Galaxy to help the project. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because they have a great history of bringing hit titles to new platforms. They are the people responsible for the Nintendo Switch port of Diablo III, the PC version of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy ports, for example! Knowing that they are on wheels gives us a lot of confidence that these classic titles will run well.

Having all the original modes available means that, as well as revealing the narrative twist of Alex Mason’s journey in the story campaign, we’re finally going back to classic multiplayer maps like Nuketown and Firing Range. And, let’s be honest, the real crown jewel for many of us is the return of the classic co-op Zombies mode, with popular maps like Kino der Toten and Mob of the Dead.
However, even with all this hype, the developers are still keeping a few secrets close to their chest. As of the time of this publication, Activision has not revealed how much these ports will cost, whether they will include a native version of PlayStation 4 for last generation players, or an exact launch date within the month of July.
It’s worth remembering that Sony users have been locked out of playing both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 since the PlayStation 3 era, which feels like a real pandemic and two World Cups at this point. Meanwhile, our friends in the Xbox ecosystem have been enjoying both games for years on the Xbox Series X|S, thanks to Microsoft’s retroactive program. Thankfully, that productivity gap for PlayStation owners is finally closing, right?
