After a few delays, Paralives has finally been released into Early Access. Described as a game created and for fans of life sims, it feels familiar from the start if you’ve played any game in the genre before. It’s playable so far, but you need to know going into the game that it is still very little to reachso you’re basically guaranteed to encounter bugs and errors.

Just because a game is low key doesn’t mean the world can’t be deep.

Despite its original version and the expected problems you may encounter, Paralives is already fun to play. It mentions a few features that other life sims have, and gives you the opportunity to choose how hard you want your game to be— an option that can be adjusted at any time— so you don’t fall into the trap that can appear in life sims where it feels like you’re just watching your characters and nothing is happening. Paralives allows you to influence the lives of your Paras in ways that affect their relationships and futures.

When I first played Paralives, it was like playing The Sims 2 for the first time all over again. The Sims 2 is my favorite franchise entry, so this was a nice surprise from Paralives, and it means the game isn’t afraid to be weird. It also offers the opportunity to make what you’re doing a lot more difficult, which I appreciate, as it’s starting to feel like a lot of life sims are unnecessarily easy. You can spend hours playing them without feeling like anything important is happening, which is the biggest complaint I had about The Sims 4.

I The design of Paralives reminds us of old life simswhich makes it absent for players like me who started playing those games as they were released and have fond memories of those times. It also makes it accessible to newcomers or just for fun, as you can simplify the game without giving up your ability to influence the lives of your Paras in meaningful ways.

As for the premise, Paralives keeps it simple. Your Paras have needs and wants. Managing their needs keeps them in good shape, which means they are more likely to progress in their career or school. Accomplishing quests gives you the opportunity to increase their personalitywhich means that it is still in the menu, but it is interesting so far as it allows you to continue to shape your Paras beyond the character creation screen with a depth that you rarely see in this genre.

The style used for Paralives graphics don’t feel overly cartoony or really real. I find the design very comfortable. I don’t want my life to be too real, but I don’t want it to feel stupid because it’s too unrealistic. So far, Paralives is in a good place among those options.

The images are not sliding right now. You will experience a lot of stuttering and visual acuity. I had a moment when one of the walls of my Paras’ house turned white repeatedly, as if it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to exist in the world or not. However, if you look at the posts from the devs on Steam, they admit there are a lot of graphic problems they know, and say they are working to fix those issues in the next episode.

As for the sounds, they are very pleasant. Build and buy modes have soothing songs rather than loud songs. I especially enjoy the sound of sales. Unlike pictures, I I haven’t encountered any problems with sounds so farwhich is great as audio errors can be very annoying, especially if the audio gets stuck in an endless loop.

The Paralives are off to a good start, but they are far from finished

After the cancellation of Life by You, it’s nice to see that Paralives has reached Early Access even with the delay. The premise is there for Paralives, but you can say that the game is far from overwhich can be frustrating when you encounter bottlenecks and other problems. I have to use the “Unstuck” option in the menu many times because my Paras end up stuck on the walls somehow. At the same time, it’s funny to see some of these issues come up, especially since I’m used to janky life sims from the early days of the genre.

The devs have been posting updates on Steam regularly, which is comforting because you know they’re getting feedback and taking it into consideration rather than ignoring it. In addition, the the road of Paralives and the claim of the devs that the DLC will be free are both promising signs for the future of the game.and I hope the base game is getting a lot of attention and updates right now and that DLC is a distant idea.

It’s a bare-bones game right now. You can still get hours of fun out of it, but you may also end up restarting the game due to issues like stuttering and crashing graphics. Despite its current state, I can still recommend the game to anyone looking for a Sims-like game, but slower and a much cheaper option. I generally enjoy early access games even with the issues they tend to have. You have the opportunity to give feedback and see the game change with each update, which we give you to feel that you helped shape what it ultimately becomes.

If you’re unsure about buying a game that’s new and still has a long way to go in development, that’s understandable even with the love it’s been getting, including from me. There are a lot of features I’d like to see in the game before picking it up if I wasn’t previewing it in its current state, like seasons and pets, but both of these are on the current roadmap. While I may not get as many hours into the game as I still have with The Sims right now, I can see a future where the version of Paralives that came out of Early Access takes up hours of my life.
