Beast Reincarnation Has Strong Connections to Blade Runner

Known worldwide as the studio that created Pokémon, Game Freak has been developing quality games since the early 90s, shaping generations of gamers and becoming one of the most influential franchises of all time—and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Game Freak’s Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, Pokémon Winds and Waves, will be hitting shelves in 2027, but before we resume our planned monster-catching journey, Game Freak is showing its versatility with its new action RPG title, Monster Reincarnation, which draws inspiration from a magical place.

Beast Reincarnation and Blade Runner Share a Strong Connection

This isn’t the sweet story of Ash Ketchum embarking on a journey to become the best, as no one has ever been, catching beloved Pokémon and making friends along the way—Beast Reincarnation looks like a very dark journey, but luckily, you’ll still have a friend by your side.

Emma and her faithful canine companion, Koo, have been shunned by society because they suffer from Blight, a parasitic plant disease that has swept the world. As a result, Emma and Koo are forced to traverse post-apocalyptic Japan, defeating bosses to capture their power, hone their skills, and ultimately, bring down the Reincarnation Beast.

While there are still some elements of Pokémon-esque gameplay, including turn-based combat (mixed with real-time combat) and the ability to create an unbreakable bond with your companion as you destroy enemies with superior skill and strategy, Beast Reborn has many interesting design elements to say the least.

Game Director Kota Furushima recently conducted an interview with Game Rant’s Nick Rodriguez to take a closer look at the dynamic between Emma and Koo, and talk about some of the studio’s design choices and inspirations.

Some players have been comparing Beast of Reincarnation with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and NieR: Automata, and although Furushima did not object to these comparisons, he pointed out that the game instead shares a lot with the movie Blade Runner: “I’m a gamer, so I get a lot of inspiration from other titles. through, the movie Blade Runner. That film has a sense of world building that resonated with me, so I looked into it as it developed Beast of Reincarnationespecially in the case of mixing truth with fiction. However, I would say that I used it more as a point of reference than inspiration. “

Secret Theme Behind The Story

Beast of Reincarnation will not only showcase Game Freak’s ability to differentiate between different styles of storytelling and gameplay, it seems that they also took the time to inject some mystery into the game’s story, with an underlying message. “I don’t have specific ideas behind the design of the game, so I’d like players to really get their own experience with Monster Reincarnation. However, I will say that there is a secret theme behind the story—I won’t go into it, but players can discover it for themselves. It will probably be a challenge, though.”

An official combat overview was also recently released, showcasing powerful bosses, an exciting mix of real-time and real-time combat, time-limiting and plant-exploiting abilities, and a closer look at skill trees that will allow gamers to explore different gameplay modes as they explore post-apocalyptic Japan.

Beast of Reincarnation is scheduled to launch on August 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
