GTA VI Officially Costs $80, Ultimate Edition And Pre-Order Details Live – WGB

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will officially begin at midnight tonight. Ahead of a potential internet breach (I’m kidding, but a little bit) Take-Two Interactive has also finally confirmed what everyone wanted to know: how much Grand Theft Auto VI will cost.

According to Take-Two’s official announcement, Grand Theft Auto VI will retail for $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition will cost $99.99. They have not confirmed other regional prices, such as here in the UK.

That’s not exactly cheap, but it’s probably less surprising than some of the apocalyptic predictions that have been circulating online. At various points over the past year, commentators, analysts and random people with Twitter accounts have suggested that Rockstar could charge anything from $90 to $100 or more for a standard plan.

And, well, out came my whole happy article about Rockstar possibly charging GTA VI and setting the industry on fire was complete nonsense. Thanks, Rockstar. Gits.

There will be a portable version of the game available, but it won’t contain a disc – just a download code. That version will be available on November 12 to allow users time to preload the game before its release on November 19. Similarly, the regular digital preload will go live on November 12.

Anyone who pre-orders gets the Vintage Vice City pack, which contains:

That’s all out of the way, let’s talk, because the big story is what happens next.

For years the industry has debated whether game prices should go up. The other side points out that games are, in many ways, cheaper than ever when adjusted for inflation, despite development costs rising into the hundreds of millions of dollars. The other side argues that games are inherently expensive entertainment products and that constantly asking players to pay more is not a sustainable solution for a sustainable budget. They also point out that many of the game’s rising costs and timelines are leading to problems in the industry.

Whichever side of that argument you sit on, Grand Theft Auto VI’s $80 launch is almost guaranteed to dominate the battle.

So far, efforts to push the industry toward $80 prices have been unsuccessful. Nintendo caused controversy when it announced that Mario Kart World would cost $80 on the Switch 2, while Microsoft attempted a similar move with Outer Worlds 2 before quickly reversing course and returning the game to its usual $70 price point after widespread backlash.

The difference, of course, is that none of those games are Grand Theft Auto VI. And there are no other hopefuls looking towards the top of the tag.

Rockstar is in a unique position in the industry. GTA V sold over 230 million copies, GTA Online became a cultural phenomenon, and GTA VI is arguably the most anticipated entertainment release in the world. If any company can convince millions of people to pay $80 for a game, it’s Rockstar. Hell, they can put it at $100 and the payout will be matching the payout with a smile.

The concern of many players is not necessarily that of Grand Theft Auto VI itself. That’s what other publishers will do after that. When one of the biggest games ever released successfully sells for $80, executives across the industry can see that as permission to try something similar with their own titles, regardless of whether their games command anything close to GTA’s aura level.
