Halo Studios Reportedly Has No New Campaign or Multiplayer Game in Development – WGB

Halo Studios reportedly doesn’t have a new campaign or multiplayer game in development, with its teams currently scrambling to generate ideas for whatever comes next. Halo: The Emergence Campaignlaunching in a week or so.

The claim comes from a new report by Rebs Gaming, who claim to have obtained the information from a direct source before passing it on to two additional sources who they both claim are legitimate. None of this has been officially confirmed by Microsoft or Halo Studios, so keep a regular pinch of salt nearby.

According to Rebs, Halo Studios originally intended to release three games in three years, beginning Halo: The Emergence Campaign. The other two projects were the now-cancelled multiplayer game Project Ekur and a new campaign, apparently a project called Halo Next.

Both have now reportedly been canceled, leaving Halo Studios without a new campaign or multiplayer game in proper development. The Rebs claim development teams are instead trying to put together ideas quickly so that the next Halo project can finally be decided and put into production.

That’s an incredibly empty roadmap for the studio that announced in October 2024 that it had “multiple projects” in development, all built using Unreal Engine 5. Less than two years later, Rebs’ report suggests it’s over. The campaign appeared he survived.

Project Ekur was obviously supposed to fill the multiplayer space of that three-game plan. As I covered earlier this month, it went through many different paths during development, including a large experience influenced by Halo 5 Warzone mode. Rebs now adds that it ended up being full circle and it became a war battle again just before it was cancelled.

Ekur was reportedly being considered for a sad or possible launch during Halo Fest. With the project now underway, the Rebs don’t expect a new game to be announced at the event. The best case scenario, he suggests, would be Halo Studios announcing that something new has entered development.

The studio is apparently considering DLC Halo: The Emergence Campaignalthough that doesn’t seem to go into full development either. Presumably, a lot will depend on how the remake performs when it launches on July 28.

It is also said that there is internal uncertainty about the rumours Episode 2 again Episode 3 it will be done again, too. This is a major change, however, because the Reb’s previous report in May said that both of these changes had progressed.

Assuming the Rebs’ new reporting is correct, this is absolutely true.

Not having a main Halo campaign in development is insane. Halo Infinite launched in 2021, and even if Halo Studios could agree to a new campaign tomorrow, modern development times mean it will likely still be years away. One of Xbox’s biggest franchises may be headed for a big gap between original games because the studio behind it apparently hasn’t settled on a sequel.

Halo Studios deserves a lot of criticism for that, especially after rebranding and moving to Unreal Engine 5 as the start of a great new era. For now, that new season consists of remaking the original game again, canceling two projects and quickly sketching out another.

However, the responsibility does not stop at the door of the studio. Halo Studios is owned and overseen by Xbox, which should be controlling its developers, setting priorities and stepping in when big projects start to run into trouble. Halo joins the likes of Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Gears of War as franchises that have been mismanaged, allowing all the big names to languish.

Halo is not a forgotten asset that Xbox found in the back of the filing cabinet. It’s one of the franchises that built an entire genre. So, what exactly were Halo Studios and Xbox doing?
