How to Unlock All Map Routes in Starfox

The fun and glory of Star Fox is back in its unexpected Switch 2 version, with plenty for new players and veterans alike to dive into right from the start. Although nearly two decades separate the two versions, the remake includes many of the familiar bells and whistles of the original, such as a strikingly different map of the Lylat system.

For those not familiar with the original, Star Fox features possible routes to explore on a map, and each one is determined by the choices you make throughout the campaign. If you’re not sure where to start, below is a guide to all possible map routes in Star Fox, including all the alternate paths, choices, and endings.

How to Complete a Route in Star Fox

Like its Nintendo 64 predecessor, in order to advance the story in Star Fox, you must complete at least one of several options in the Lylat System to reach the distant poisonous planet Venom, where Andross is fighting.

Your actions on each planet, asteroid field, or satellite base affect how your trajectory progresses. There are hidden objectives or paths that will lead you to different outcomes most of the time, and in order to enjoy all the routes of the game, you will need to pay attention to those objectives every time you go through certain areas. For example, flying over certain obstacles in Corneria will take you and Falco to another path near the end of the level. Meanwhile, successfully accessing the wormhole in Meteo will send you to a different location than originally planned.

Regardless of the route you take, once you get to Venom and defeat(?) Andross, that ends that particular mission. You will need to start a new one to go on a different route. However, one feature that is especially useful in a remake is that you can replay the planet/place you just finishedin case you want a different result than the one you got. That’s in addition to the option to change course at certain points on the map, whenever Peppy and/or Slippy says so. For example, in Sector Y you can choose to scout Katina or head for Aquas as a target.

In any case, this makes it easy to combine the completion of all areas in the Lylat System in a few runs, if you want to conquer the entire map.

All Possible Map Routes in Star Fox (How to Unlock)

The Lylat System includes various possible paths to Venom, although the main thing to note is that no matter which path you take, they all ultimately lead to two possible endings for Venom (see our last section below). Which path you take that leads to that point is undoubtedly the most important.

The thing is, the routes in Starfox are almost completely customizable, and there is no default route that is predetermined for you to take. Similarly, these routes are not sorted by a set difficulty, meaning that no route is more difficult than another. How you access the system’s 15 different locations (16 if you count both versions of Venom) is entirely up to you.

All that said, to help you understand how to navigate the Lylat system, there are three main routes you can take, and where you should start. Two of them focus on navigating the areas in the lower part of the system, leading to the first variation of Venom, while the third focuses on the areas in the northern part and leads to the second variation of Venom (and the actual ending).

All Possible Endings in Starfox

Nintendo Needs A New Star Fox Not A Fourth Version Of The Same Game

While there are many different routes you can take to Venom in Starfox, there are only two endings you can open at the end of the road, depending on which side of the planet you fly to. This is almost identical to the original N64 version of the game, including the objectives that lead to the specified ending.

End 1 – Andross Lives

This is called the default ending, which means that it is the easiest to reach, as more paths can lead to this side of Venom than the other. After completing the Bolse level, you’ll come to Venom to encounter an endless gauntlet of enemies standing between you and Andross. Fight your way through them, and an additional boss called Golemech, to reach the Andross dungeon.

Once there, you’ll fight Andross’ robot form, which is divided into two sections. After defeating these two species, you will retreat from the base and return to the Great Fox. ‘Mission Complete’ will be shown, and a cutscene will reveal that Andross is not really defeated.

Ending 2 – Andross Dies (True Ending)

This is designated as the “true” ending, meaning it’s the one you most want to achieve in terms of finishing Andross. After completing the Area 6 level, you will come upon Venom at first unseen. However, the Star Wolf team will engage in new, powerful battleships, and you will need to take them down again.

When they are dust, Fox will enter Andross’ basement. You’ll face him in the final boss battle, and this time, defeating his first robotic method (head and hands) will reveal his brain and his floating, reinforced eyes. This is Andross’ true form, and defeating it will completely destroy him. After that, the Fox will escape the base as it self-destructs with the help of a stranger (no spoilers!), and return to the Great Fox. ‘Objective Accomplished’ will be shown, and you’ll get the full credits followed by a long cutscene afterwards.
