Modern Warfare 4 Wants You To Leave Depth Of Field On, For Good Reason

When a new Call of Duty game is launched, the first move of every player is to open the settings menu and turn off the unwanted options, so that you are ready to play the way you choose. That might be disabling controller vibration, motion blur, or depth of field. However, Infinity Ward wants players to stop limiting the depth of field to Modern Warfare 4.

The way Infinity Ward will try to convince you to keep depth of field enabled is to improve the setting from iterations that have appeared in previous Call of Duty titles. The goal of those changes is to ensure that there is better visibility when depth of field is enabled, so you can make the most of the visuals on offer to secure that all-important kill.

In the fifth episode of From Ward, Infinity Ward points out that players are removing depth of field from the game, even though they should mimic the realistic approach Modern Warfare 4 is trying to capture. To this extent, the depth of field interferes with your view of the opponent if you aim to see down.

In the comparison provided by Infinity Ward, you can see the difference between the old depth of field and the new one. The new version of the setting dims part of your weapon’s iron sight, rather than the target you’re aiming at. This keeps immersion while aiming and shooting, without affecting the visibility of the enemy you’re trying to take out.

Depth of field isn’t all that’s changed in Modern Warfare 4. Bloom has been removed, which means shooting from the waist will be more consistent with where your weapon is pointing. Overall, Modern Warfare 4’s weapons are expected to respond naturally to the way you move, including changes in posture and environment, leading to the behavior of guns on the battlefield.

Elsewhere, the movement of Modern Warfare 4 is also being revised, with the aim of making movement easier, delivered with an emphasis on player freedom. Movement, including that of combat and gunplay, is designed to feel responsive in a way that maintains momentum and control. There will be dressing, climbing, hanging, leaning, and jumping to expand the ways to navigate the map and approach each interaction.

The new depth of field blurs part of your weapon’s iron sight, rather than the target you’re aiming at.

As a theme with Modern Warfare 4, the movement system will be based on reality to increase the intensity of all gunfights, no matter how you play. That means no more wall jumping, but a return to the boots on the ground that fans of the modern fighting series know best.

Among the realistic and classic weapons are the Apex attachments that will change gameplay. Attachments featured in the fifth episode of From The Ward include a rapid-fire Revolver attachment that allows you to fire off shots in rapid succession, a laser-guided rocket launcher underneath, and a PPSh-41 that shoots fire. So, there will still be highlights and an extra layer of customization to your upload.

It will be interesting to see if depth of field will be used to a greater extent in Modern Warfare 4 compared to recent Call of Duty titles, but ultimately it will all come down to personal preference. Alongside the campaign, multiplayer, and Warzone is the new DMZ mode, and if the new take on the depth of field is a hit in one mode, it will work in almost every other experience.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, although Infinity Ward has not announced exact release times.
