New AI Meta Image Tool Lets Others Use Your Social Instagram Photos Into AI Images

Meta announced that its new Artificial Intelligence (AI) model Muse Image allows people to use public Instagram posts and reels to generate AI content, and is enabled automatically.

“You can also @-mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles to your photos,” the social media giant said in a post.

“Whether you want to design a custom event invitation, tease a creative collaboration idea, or produce a personalized illustration, tagging a user’s name allows Meta AI to use public images to create a post-ready image”

Muse Image is the first image-focused Meta model from its Superintelligence Labs, which the company said uses advanced thinking to better understand complex instructions and combine multiple images into high-quality creations to share across its platforms and beyond.

It is also embedded in WhatsApp and Instagram to facilitate AI-powered results for Instagram stories and photo generation in direct conversations with Meta AI on WhatsApp. These features are released in restricted countries to begin with.

Users have the option to tag another public Instagram account in the Meta AI app to create new reels, posts, or stories that can reuse “part or all of your published photos, videos or reels,” automatically turning public content into AI-generated photo fodder.

“Additionally, people can personalize your Instagram content using AI features in Meta,” the company notes in a help document. “Depending on another user’s settings, this means that your repurposed content may be found in search engine results.”

In cases where a user has gone public to a private account, all reels, posts, and stories using your content will be removed from Instagram if you set their account to private for more than 24 hours. That said, existing content created by others using AI features will not be removed.

For Instagram users under 18 with public accounts, only their followers can reuse media if their account settings allow reuse.

It’s also worth noting that users won’t be notified if their photos are remixed using AI. Notifications will continue to be sent if a public account reuses user content to create remixes, sequences, stickers, and templates.

Meta, however, insisted that users have full control over how their content can be marked for AI, and the option to turn it off. To do so:

  1. Open it Instagram
  2. Go to yours profile
  3. Tap that ☰ menu
  4. Open it Settings and function
  5. Tap Sharing and reuse
  6. Scroll to Allow people to create and reuse your content
  7. Close: Posted again Reels

Instagram users with public profiles are recommended to turn off the setting, as it was created before disabling it. This feature is expected to be available soon on Facebook, Messenger, and advertisers using Meta Advantage+ creative.

Part of a Broader Industry Trend

The development comes as tech companies are increasingly embedding AI into their products, making them opt out of automation, as a way to leverage AI services.

In recent weeks, Google has also released a new Search Services History option in its privacy settings that allows the company to store media, including images, files, and audio recordings, and videos, to improve its AI models for logged-in users.

“Your media may be used to improve your experience on Google services, such as allowing you to revisit your previous virtual searches,” the support document says. “Saved media may be used to improve and improve Google’s AI models and technologies, and the Google services that use them. If media is saved, you can view it in your Search Services History.”

“Google also uses your history to provide, improve, and improve its services (such as generating AI models) and to protect Google, its users, and the public with the help of human reviewers,” Google continued.

Separately, Google also added a new “personalized recommendations” setting that, when enabled, uses account profile information, Search Services History, and other activity saved across Google sites and apps to provide results tailored to Search and AI Answers, selected feeds in Google Search and News Apps, and relevant to their location.
