Paralives Devs Fully Sponsored Their Guide

With only 15 developers, the team behind the new life simulation game, Paralives, has struck gold and is now financially set for the next few years, and is showing gratitude to the community by choosing free updates over paid DLC.

Paralives launched into early access on May 25th, reaching a peak player count of 78,603, and racking up over 5,000 user reviews on Steam, many of whom praised the game for its unique character creation and satisfying build features.

Return to the roots of the Life Sim genre.

While life-sim fans are loving everything that’s going on, there’s still a lot of work to be done before Paralives feels like a polished product, and the development team recently held a Q&A on Reddit to talk to fans about what’s next.

Paralives Devs Select Free Updates with Paid DLCs

Nine members of the Paralives team were present for the Q&A session, including game designers, artists, composers, and Paralives Studio Founder, Alex Massé.

The devs fielded every kind of question imaginable, from quality of life requests, or questions about whether certain items or features will be added to the game—one fan couldn’t resist asking if vegetarian poutine would be introduced anytime soon.

As starry-eyed people came up with tsunami-sized ideas for new features and improvements, Paralives’ roadmap began to reveal itself, and it looks very promising.

While there was a lot of great discussion going on, there were two main topics that seemed to stand out from the rest: DLCs and standalones.

The Paralives team stated that a win of this magnitude will support the studio for years to come, allowing them to offer free updates instead of making their fans pay for additional content: “There will be no paid DLCs, only free updates! Even after Early Access. As life sim fans, we wanted to make a game that we would love to play ourselves without the need to buy a lot of additional content to bring that.”

Another topic that received a lot of attention was about NPC autonomy. Players have reported that NPCs don’t really do anything if not interacted with, and the devs said they have plans to fix this, “Autonomy is an important aspect of the game that needs more love, more moderation, and more content. The characters are on their phone a lot especially because that interaction can be done without pointing to any other character or normal object, so these are able to do very normal things. More actions and interactions in general during early access will help, it should make the characters do things a lot of variety!”

The developers have said that their focus in the coming weeks/months will be to address major bugs and crashes that can negatively impact gameplay. If Paralives is free of bugs, the devs will start releasing new content in free updates later this year.

Features that will reportedly be added to Paralives during early access include:

  • Climate and seasons

  • Calendar

  • Family tree

  • Dogs, cats, and horses

  • Cars, bikes, and boats

  • Swimming

  • NPC story progression

  • Fishing

  • Farming

  • Organizing community events

  • Tools for planning and creating cities

  • More personality traits

  • The Creation of Domesticated Animals

  • Genetic Programming

  • Additional clothing items, accessories, and hairstyles

After seven years of development, Founder and Lead Engineer, Alex Massé, says that launching Paralives was an emotional moment, but the team can now breathe and continue to develop their passion project with the help of the community. “Initially, I was very ambitious with the scope of the project so we had to cut things down, but I’m very happy with what we were able to include in this first release!”
