Ah, the perfect time to take a look back at what’s been going on in fighting and esports. Honestly, the number of things that were going on was overwhelming, but I think I narrowed it down to some of the best things.

Over in Japan, we saw Come on again Not at allthe two biggest events of the year so far. We also have a number of cruises on the way, including Evo Las Vegas, Supernova, and Port Priority. And everything in between.

And through it all, we have plenty of salt, drama, beauty, and crazy talent. Your standard FGC tournament stuff.

Evo Japan Breaks Guinness World Record

sf6 evo japan guinness record

The Evo Japan registration was pretty descriptive. Street Fighter 6 it took tons of entries, but Tekken 8, Guilty Gear -Strive-, and other titles were so low that I’m surprised this event held as much weight as it did in those scenes. It just goes to show how popular Street Fighter is in the FGC right now, even though fans have a lot of complaints about how Capcom is handling things.

However, Evo Japan’s Street Fighter 6 Tourney now holds the Guinness World Record for “most participants in a single fighting tournament.” The previous record was 7,083, but Evo Japan’s Street Fighter 6 tour had 7,168 entries. It shows how big the SF6 scene is in Japan.

Eisuke “Yamaguchi” Yamaguchihe was the winner of the biggest competition, hitting Victor “Punk” Woodley to become the first ever Evo champion.

Punk Divides The World With Tea Strikes Top 8

Speaking of Punk, his journey to the Grand Finals was very convincing. However, he had a few standout moments.

During high performance against Higuchi Kojiro At Loser’s Finals, Punk unleashed a series of quick tea bags before KO’ing his opponent. The Japanese audience loved it.

Reads one translated tweet: “Wow, Punk is back the one from Street Fighter 5 who was so ridiculously strong that he kept the gameplay hard and no one could stop him…!”

While some felt that Punk’s tea drinking was disrespectful, others pointed out that this is what he is and what he is popular for. Punk has always been a classy, angry, and chaotic performer. That’s what makes his performance so interesting.

“Punk’s taunting of Higuchi with squats was so full of wrestling vibes that I broke down, but it seems like he got a pretty bad reputation?” said one Japanese fan. “On the internet, when an underpowered guy does that to an unknown opponent, it’s complete rubbish, but in the Evo Japan arena, in a match between top CC division players, they go out with a mental attack knowing full well they’re going to be criticized – isn’t that a total waste?

“Yes, I don’t recommend it.”

We’re not done with Punk yet. While Punk came in second place in the Evo Japan Street Fighter 6 main tournament, he was very satisfied with the weekend as a whole. Once, he proposed to his girlfriend, who said yes!

He tweeted: “I still got the ultimate prize: a partner and a qualifier for the Esports World Cup!”

However, there was a bit of drama with this proposal. Because of course there was. This is FGC, after all. Many people pointed out that the proposal was lame and easy, when Punk proposed in front of the toilets backstage.

The back and forth was hilarious:

  • Zondi: “If someone proposed to me in front of the bathroom, I would kill myself in front of them.”
  • Punk: “It’s a good thing no one’s going to lift your ass.”

Supernova Presents Steve’s Clear Decision

I Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the community has Steve’s fatigue. Ever since the Minecraft character was added as DLC, he has been widely hated in the competitive community. He is considered the most powerful game-breaking mechanic. And he’s boring as s*** to watch.

In the last few years, the Top 8 has been taken by Steve’s youngsters. And it spoiled a lot of the songs and stories of the tournament. Also, matches are a snooze fest. Everywhere is buzzkill.

Despite this, the organizers of the competition never intended to ban the actor. Nintendo even warned that tournaments can’t. Not sure what that was about. It’s not like they care about sports.

However, Supernova announced its return recently – and it’s bringing an interesting set of rules with it. Steve Stage Clause: “If one player chose Steve when his opponent did not, the previous stage selection process is ignored and the player who did not choose Steve will choose the stage to play on in any rule stage.”

The Smash community has praised this rule, and Melee God Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma saying it is “a very big development.”

He wrote: “Steve’s players should be allowed to play, but to pretend that the actor is invincible is also bad faith.”

Some Smash players pointed out that Japan has been asking for Steve to be locked up for years. They have been praising Supernova’s decision for a broken character. As players around the world love Supernova’s new rules, perhaps it will carry over to other Majors.

Arslan Ash Works Well At Evo Japan

Arslan Ash it is the undisputed best Episode 8 player in the world. He’s won basically every Evo and every other major in the last few years. He moved to Japan to focus more on Tekken, if that’s possible.

With seven Evo titles under his belt, Arslan Ash is a sure winner at Evo Japan. However, he ended up in 9th place.

The biggest mistake for us was playing Zafina. This was Arslan Ash’s new choice, and it seems to be unsuccessful. However, others believe that going to Japan made Arslan Ash worse in this game.

Others point to his impressive performance in his pre-Evo game against it Yuta “Chikurin” Take. Chikurin defeated Arslan Ash in the first ten, which was not the expected result. He then got 9th place in the Evo. Another fan asked him if he still gets to know the good opponents in Japan like he did in Pakistan.

Hey, you can’t be #1 every second. I think it’s too early to tell if he’s really smooth.

Sparg0 KO’s Best Player In Under 60 Seconds

The Ultimate Prodigy Edgar “Sparg0” Valdez there was a good show at Kagaribi #15. He ended up in third place, but left the competition with the best minute of the weekend.

While competing DoramigiJapanese Min Min player often considered the best in the world, Sparg0 released one of the craziest moments of all time.

Both tied 1-1, in the final round. Sparg0, playing Cloud, got Doramigi from three life to zero in less than a minute. He didn’t agree, throwing Min Min endlessly. His bed did not prevent, he always gurgled. It was a spectacle.

Many are calling him the GOAT. Yes, there were haters too. Some say that Min Min was just playing badly, saying that Cloud only makes Cloud’s performance above average. Wow, you all are haters, really.

After the tournament, Sparg0 wrote: “I wanted to win but still I’m proud of how I played, I felt my mind was blocked all year, but I didn’t want to give up, I prepared a lot for this tournament, and I’m very happy to know that I can still win!”

Melee is headed for the Key Hole

I’m shocked it’s taken so long, though Super Smash Bros. Melee it’s Port Priority! The event, Port Priority: DX, will be held in Seattle, Washington in November.

Melee will be featured alongside Smash 64 and Rivals II. There will also be vendors and side events, such as Melee, Rivals, and 64 Doubles.

Seeing Melee show up at so many events is amazing. The Melee scene has survived (and thrived) all these years on grit and passion alone. There’s no money in it, so seeing another event give the Melee space a chance is great.
