VALORANT agent numbers explained
Importantly, VALORANT character numbers are not the same as agent numbers.
This is because the agent numbers are directly linked to the story of the game. Specifically, the agents are numbered according to how they joined the VALORANT Protocol (VP) of Alpha Earth.
For example, the first two letters of the join were Sulphur (VP-01) and A snake (VP-02). While these agents were both in beta for the game, we also had Breach (VP-13).
The first ten agents of VALORANT were all in VP-01 through VP-13, with VP-04 (Killjoy) and VP-11 (Reyna) added at or shortly after launch. Notably, one character, Agent 8, did not join the cast.
Where is the mysterious agent of VALORANT 8?
Until now, Riot has not revealed the identity of Agent 8 (VP-08). There is also there is no indication when the character will be released in the game.
In fact, they are the reason why the character numbers in VALORANT don’t match the agent numbers. For example, Veto is Agent 29, but currently there are only 28 characters in the game.
There have been hints and teases surrounding Agent 8 over the years. During a Reddit AMA on June 3, 2021, VALORANT Narrative leader Joe Killeen was asked about the possible release of Agent 8 and he cryptically replied:
“As soon as they come back.”
The last mention of Agent 8 came from Clove’s voice line (Agent 25), when the character says:
“So we’re going to talk about the empty locker back at the base? The one with scratch 08? Who? No one? Okay…”
Clove was released on March 26, 2024.
Agents of VALORANT are doomed
The three abandoned Agents of VALORANT emerged through data mining of early development and internal game files.
While Riot Games has never officially confirmed these abandoned VALORANT charactersthe findings provide insight into experimental designs that may help shape the agents that eventually enter the game.
- Crusader: It would be the first idea for Breach during development, with a flash/stun mechanism in the Controller role.
- Joules: A precursor to Killjoy, with the Shock Grenade and Seeker Bolt abilities included in the data.
- Shatter: Possible prototype of Yoru or maybe Phoenix. Shatter had a “cheat” ability that could create a clone to distract and deal damage.
Take information about dropped agents with a grain of salt, as they all come from unofficial sources during the early stages of game development.

Who is the new agent in VALORANT?
As reported by Esports Insider Deputy Editor, Rabia Sayal, Agent 30 may be of Croatian origin. Incidentally, links to the Croatian capital were seen in the Masters Santiago teaser trailer.
We also saw a device similar to Brimstone Stim Beacon where the barrier opens right at the end of the trailer.
As of 2024, developer Riot Games released one Duelist, two Sentinels, and one Initiator. That means, it is suspected that Agent 30 it can be Controller. Take this as speculation until the full reveal of what is expected on March 15 during the Masters Santiago Grand Final.
Finally, the Masters Santiago trophy is themed around the new VALORANT agent. However, no specific details can be found on the design.
The conclusion
VALORANT’s roster of unique agents continues to grow. With each release of the character, the sci-fi history of the game is continued, revealing new details of the complex plot.
For us, the most exciting feature of the new agent is its power kit, it brings new potential gameplay elements and, therefore, a change in the esports meta.
