Where to Customize Your Character in Phasmophobia

Character customization is a long-requested feature in Phasmophobia, as who doesn’t want to have a very well-equipped drip while investigating the worst rounds, banshees, and everything in between? Thankfully, the wishes of many in the gamer community have come true with the gamer’s game update (0.17.0.0). Now you’re free to dress up your amazing detective as you see fit, and add more options to your supernatural wardrobe for events and other special challenges.

That said, it can be tricky to understand exactly how the customization version of Phasmophobia works. If you want to understand something, here’s how to customize your character and make them look their best from head to toe.

When Was Characterization Added to Phasmophobia?

Character customization is a key feature that was strengthened as part of Kinetic Games’ development roadmap for Phasmophobia over the past year or two. It was finally released as the focus of the aptly named Player Character Update (0.17.0.0) on May 5, 2026.

At its inception, the update accidentally caused many gameplay-related issues that rendered certain aspects of the game almost unplayable for a large portion of the gaming community. However, an extensive and comprehensive series of hotfix patches were applied in the days after to fix various bugs and issues, including some related to the Customization menu.

To access the Character Customization menu in Phasmophobia, start with entering the main lobby. From there, interact with the screen to the right of the notice board where you usually manage the upload and development of your devices. Now there is an option called ‘Customization‘ at the bottom of the drop-down menu on the left hand side of the screen, under ‘Quick Loading’.

Select it, and this will open the customization menu. From here, you can fully customize your paranormal investigator, from his physical appearance to his clothes. Additionally, the ability to customize your ID Card has also been moved here (instead of the notice board).

While the Character Customization menu is a feature that will receive constant updates in Phasmophobia, it has few options for players to choose from initially.

First, you can customize your character’s physical appearance based on the game’s newly created roster of actually named characters. Each one has its own history that you can read when you select each one from the menu. From there, you can slightly adjust their physical features, including hairstyles, piercings, glasses, and hair color.

There are also options to customize their clothing, from their jacket to their pants. In each sub-menu you’ll have a number of default, plain-looking options to start with. There are also other unique options that you can buy with the money you earn from investigation contracts, such as how you buy equipment upgrades.

In addition, unlocking prestige levels and achievements also get you more options, with graphic texts based on card designs and game ID badges. Seasonal events and collaborations like Alan’s Wake also provide rewards for customizing outfits that you can use forever once you’ve earned them in-game.

Finally, there is also the option to equip your own customized ID card to your character’s coat, as well as special charms that can be hung from the card. This neat feature is available in the submenu when you customize your ID card and badge, via a button with a checkmark icon at the very bottom.

As Phasmophobia continues to add updates and hot items, be sure to double check your character’s appearance when logging in, as sometimes your clothes or ID may change or reset.
