Hunter Returns to Metro 2039, This Time as a Villain

Ukrainian studio 4A Games has finally revealed the details of Metro 2039, the fourth entry in the Metro universe, made by Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Disclosure, in partnership with Xbox, agrees with the author’s comments about Metro 2039 being a very difficult entry, and no choice confirms this more than the central character of the upcoming game.
After leading the line in the first three games of the series, Artyom’s time in the spotlight is over, giving Hunter his time in the sun instead. Yes, even under a candle, deep in the tunnels of the Moscow underground.
If it is hostile, you kill it
Despite being the focus of Metro 2039, Hunter has been an important character in previous games. It is his visit to Artyom’s station that sets up our hero’s journey to save the Metro from darkness. Later, despite being presumed missing at the start of Metro Exodus, Hunter’s dog tag saves Artyom from untimely death.
In his brief appearance, Hunter established himself as a fierce defender of the Metro and its people against any perceived threats. After surviving his encounter with the Dark Ones, Hunter became a broken, unpredictable man, leading to the killing of the infected stations.

The end of the world can be expressed in many additional ways.
Five years later, the powerlessness left by Miller from Moscow allowed Hunter to unite Metro under his radical approach.
The so-called Novoreich wants to reclaim outer space by any means necessary, and rules the Metro population through fear and propaganda. This is the world your character, referred to only as the Stranger, encounters when he arrives in the corrupt capital of Russia.
‘Blacker Than Anything You’ve Seen Before’
Subduing Metro residents using propaganda and fear is not particularly new, but until now, no ruling party has had absolute power in the tunnel.
The setting of the upcoming game seeks to show how bad things can happen when corrupt, unstable people are given absolute power.
After surviving his encounter with the Dark Ones, Hunter became a broken, unpredictable man, leading to the killing of the infected stations.
According to writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, the story of Metro 2039 will be ‘darker than anything’ we’ve seen so far, and it’s a ‘very adult story’ that he worked on with 4A Games. It’s a big claim, especially given the strength of the previous three games and their respective DLCs, but unfortunately there’s a real component behind this change.
Glukhovsky left Russia in early 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine, and has been a wanted man in his country since then because of his opposition to the government.
He says he has wanted to tell the story of Metro 2039 for a long time, but ‘he had to wait for the truth to be delayed.’ Now that, in his assessment, the world is covered in clear enough terms, it ‘doesn’t appear to be a dystopia or science fiction’, it is ‘important to anyone’ instead.
So, the next time you look at the state of global affairs and think that the world is struggling, just remember: if you didn’t breastfeed, we wouldn’t have Metro 2039. A positive attitude is the perfect companion for exploring Metro, second only to a full gun.
