Viewing is often used to determine whether a notable esports tournament is a success or a failure. High numbers often grab the headlines, with some tournaments peaking at several million viewers, matching or surpassing those of mainstream sports spectacles.

Between June 19 and 21, 2026, Counter-Strike‘s IEM Cologne Major filled the iconic LANXESS Arena as thousands watched the world’s best teams battle it out for Valve’s most prestigious shooter trophy. On the same weekend, the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) heads to London’s Copper Box Arena for its second Masters event of 2026.

As the dust settles in both tournaments, viewership figures have sparked heated debate as both communities defend their coveted title in the viewership battle between Counter-Strike and VALORANT.

But there is a clear winner.

Record-Breaking Cologne

After the conclusion of the Cologne Major, Esports Charts reported that the title’s first tentpole tournament reached a peak of 2,752,353 viewers, making it the most watched Counter-Strike tournament. The Grand Final between Team Falcons and FURIA surpassed the previous high of 2,748,434 reached at the Stockholm Major in 2021.

There are several reasons why the Cologne Major hit a record number. A legendary gun Nikola “NiKo” Kovač finally got his hands on the trophy after 16 previous attempts to win Counter-Strike’s grand prize. His victory was met with great support from fans and the wider industry, and even saw Major League Baseball referencing the success on all of its social media channels.

The Grand Final also had a battle in between Finn “Karrigan” Andersen once Gabriel “FalleN” Toledotwo famous Counter-Strike game leaders. Karrigan’s best mid-round calls proved to be the difference, with Team Falcons sweeping FURIA 3-0. The Dane also set a new record, achieving the worst Major Grand Final rating.

The victory for the Falcons team was not a surprising result either. The Saudi Arabian organization successfully navigated their way past powerhouses Team Spirit and Team Vitality to secure a spot in the Grand Final alongside FURIA, who defeated 9z and Aurora Gaming on their way to the tournament final. Besting Team Spirit and Team Vitality is a remarkable achievement in itself, given the incredible talent represented by both teams.

A Big Gap in VALORANT

Compared to the record-breaking Cologne Majore, VALORANT’s VCT Masters London recorded a high nearly three times the low. Although the peak was much smaller than its rival, Masters London still surpassed one million viewers, making it the fifth most watched Masters event in history.

The event may not have reached the heights of Counter-Strike’s biggest tournaments, but it surpassed Masters Santiago’s peak viewership, which reached 883,064 viewers.

While Leviathan and Paper Rex battle it out in front of a packed live audience, it’s likely that the timing of the Grand Final played its part in the struggle to generate high viewing figures. A better time for fans in South America and Southeast Asia could have boosted the numbers even further, allowing more fans to watch their favorite bands rock the big stage.

After the conclusion of both tournaments, VALORANT fans were quick to defend the gap between Riot Games’ shooter and Valve. Esports charts do not include Chinese viewers, suggesting the total number is higher than the record number. Several Chinese streaming platforms use heat indexes to measure popularity, while their algorithms remain secret. As a result, esports viewership data rarely includes statistics from China.

But will the Chinese audience really flock to the VCT Masters in London to rival IEM Cologne?

CS2 vs. VALORANT: Sorry, Fair Comparison

The difference between the Cologne Major and the London Masters continues to divide the opinion of fans, a few days after both Grand Finals. Although Counter-Strike is enjoying its new record after 27 years in the market, some members of the VALORANT community believe that the comparison between the two events is unfair.

The Counter-Strike Major takes place twice a year and is considered the title tournament. VALORANT Masters events take place several times a year, and the season-ending VCT Champions are considered a good comparison. The most watched VCT Champions event ever was the 2022 tournament, where Brazilian side LOUD defeated OpTic Gaming in the Grand Final. The tournament is VALORANT’s second most watched, peaking at 1,505,804.

Even when comparing the Cologne Major to the most watched event of the VCT Championship, there is still a big the gap between the shooting heads. Excuses are forgiven, but it’s clear that Counter-Strike 2 is the more popular of the two, at least for that weekend.

Besides this, we must remember that the ecosystem of VALORANT sports is still young, as it was launched in 2020. Achieving over a million hits in its sixth year is an impressive achievement and cements its place as one of the biggest scenes in the first-person shooter genre.

Despite the various opinions, it is clear that the IEM Cologne Major dominated the VCT Masters London in the audience department. Despite the huge gap, having two first-person shooters flourishing at the same time is a huge benefit to the wider ecosystem. Counter-Strike may have won the battle of Cologne and London, but the battle between the long-time veteran and relative newcomer VALORANT has just begun.
