Nostalgia appears frequently in Call of Duty franchise in the form of multiplayer maps and weapons featured in the latest release of the year. The launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered in 2016 also demonstrated Activision’s awareness of the throwback effect and its ability to attract interest to its product.

After ten years, the publisher decided to play the nostalgia card with the PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Their launch exceeded expectations, surpassing the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 in the PlayStation charts and showing a healthy appetite for old-school action.

Black Ops 2 was an easy time for Call of Duty esports. It’s an open ecosystem there MLG, MG, Gfinityagain EGL will host several tournaments throughout the season in addition to the Champs, allowing novice and professional teams to compete in the same tournament. As a result, the lesser-known teams were able to surprise against the established names, which is rarely achieved due to the current division between the CDL and Challenger circuit.

Taking the attention of longtime fans of the franchise is revealing Call of Duty League (CDL) with the best chance to cash in on the Black Ops hype for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Tournament Weekend. The end-of-season tournament for the 2025/26 season will see the world’s best players compete for big money and a chance to lift the biggest Call of Duty trophy. On the sidelines of the main event, CDL can use the Black Ops 2 loophole to their advantage.

The concept of a production game to generate hype before the Grand Final is nothing new in esports. As the Champs also reveal this year’s All-Star and Team of the Year lists, a top-five award using Black Ops 2, a title known for its competitive pedigree, is a surefire way to gain renewed public interest.

Sports rarely delve into the past structures or topics that laid the foundation for what the event is today. With Riot Games already organizing League Classic game shows and Activision opening the door for Call of Duty to launch a similar campaign, taking an occasional trip down memory lane could help publishers recapture the attention of fans who may have drifted away from the world of competitive gaming.
