How to play as a Rook

The Rook is the most unique class in Marathon, as it can be used alone, rather than with a team. The main purpose of this Shell is to loot as much as possible, which is impossible due to the fact that Rook only comes into play when you are in the middle. Since Rooks started the game later than others, there are fewer players and enemies you’ll have to worry about.

While Rook can be beneficial in replenishing your arsenal, it also puts you at a disadvantage compared to other players, due to Rook’s limited abilities and traits. Because of this, you need to pay extra attention to your surroundings to ensure that other players don’t get a jump.

If you’re interested in using Rook in Marathon, this guide is for you. Read on for Rook’s abilities, the best strategies to focus on when playing as Rook, and the best time to pick this Shell.

Rook Power, Explained

Unlike other Shells in Marathon, Rook only comes equipped with two abilities: Recovery and Signal Mask. Below is a full description of these two abilities.

  • Recovery (Primary): Activate your body’s emergency repair system to slowly restore health. Interrupted when you take damage.
  • Signal Mask (Skill): Activate the temporary holodisplay mask to fool the UESC forces, making them aware of your presence. Interrupted when you run or take damage.

Since Rook doesn’t come with any attributes, and only has two abilities on offer, he’s not very versatile in combat. However, two skills he has are very useful and help him do what he does best – loot and get out.

Rook Strategies

Marathon Rook

The first thing you need to know when playing as Rook is that you you cannot bring any of your own gear into the game. Instead, you’ll get a random starting kit when you choose a Rook.

When you play as a Rook in Marathon, your main strategy is to hit all the nearby buildings and loot as much as possible. Don’t think too much about which build to build, as you can find good loot everywhere on the Marathon maps.

When looting buildings, make sure that take your time and stay alert for any enemies. I recommend that you do the whole game stealthily, rather than sprinting everywhere (except when going to the next building), as sprinting creates loud footsteps that can alert other players.

Games with Cool Reloading Machines

If that clip is empty, these games make reloading almost as fun as shooting.

If you enter a building that hasn’t been hit by other players, and there are a good number of UESC enemies there, be sure activate your Signal Mask ability to prevent them from seeing you. You should also use this skill immediately after being spotted by an enemy UESC, if you are not ready to fight.

Feel free to complete any contracts you may have during the game, as long as they don’t involve killing other players. The last thing you want to do is start a team fight, as you will be outnumbered and at a disadvantage.

Once you’ve filled your backpack with as much loot as possible and are satisfied with your finds, make your way to the nearest Exfil location. I don’t recommend going to the guarded Exfil, because it would be very difficult to defeat all UESC enemies as a single player.

When Should You Use Rook Shell?

The Rook Marathon

The best time to use Rook in Marathon is when you really run down materials, weapons, health supplies, shields, etc. Basically, if your armory is looking bare bones, it’s probably time to use a Rook.

Although the game offers free kits where you don’t have to bring any of your gear to Tau Ceti, you won’t have the benefit of Rooks spawning late in the game. Your chances of going undetected and successfully shelling out a ton of gear are much greater if you play as a Rook than if you choose a free kit.

Rook can be very useful when it comes to closing contracts. Since Rook travels by himself, it is difficult for other players to pinpoint your location, giving you space to complete objectives.
