This Indie Horror Game Is Brave Enough To Take On GTA 6 In November

In the gaming industry, timing is everything. And when a titan like Grand Theft Auto 6 looms on the horizon, the entire release calendar undergoes a collective, panicked shift.

We’ve seen it happen time and time again, and it’s happening right now as we speak: major publishers are trying to move their pending projects to “safe” windows like September or early October, wanting to avoid being completely crushed. Rockstaran unstoppable hype machine.

To be honest, it’s a smart and sensible survival strategy because, let’s be real, no one wants to launch their passion project in the shadow of a game that will easily dominate the world’s cultural conversation for months. However, apparently, no one told the people Junkfish – or maybe they’re brave enough to go toe-to-toe with GTA 6 anyway.

The “I’m Nobody” moment.

While the rest of the industry is scrambling for coverage, this indie studio is doing the unthinkable. Instead of fleeing to the safety of the crowded late summer, they are marching towards danger! That’s right: their promising new title, The Wilderdarkofficially key release date of November 3bravely standing down in the middle of the most dangerous launch window of the year.

However, if the developer’s name sounds familiar, it’s because Junkfish is the creative force behind the critically acclaimed indie hit. The Monster. After learning the art of keeping players scared in haunted, procedurally generated cargo ships, the team returns to the world of first-person survival, but this time, they trade in supernatural monsters for a threat that feels unique and ancient: dinosaurs.

Their promising new title, Wilderdark, has officially locked in a November 3rd release date, bravely standing in the middle of the year’s most dangerous launch window.

But don’t expect a mindless, heavy shooter when you easily cut down raptors with an assault rifle. According to the press release, Wilderdark is a pure horror survival experience at its core, and in order to stay alive in this hostile world, you will need to analyze every single inch of nature to avoid becoming dinner, while also looking for new discoveries and objects of interest to uncover the mysteries of the place.

This translates into a gameplay loop that requires a constant balancing act, which is very stressful – and trust me, I mean it a lot when I say this, because I had the opportunity to play the game a few months ago and I felt like I was back in my teenage years facing scary digital dinosaurs. In my first look at the game, I even wrote that Wilderdark is “a unique hybrid that lives somewhere between the curiosity of the Outer Wilds and the constant fear of Dino Crisis, revealing its identity to a genre that has been yearning for something new (and scaly).”

It’s an ambitious idea, and honestly, seeing an indie developer pull it off in such style is incredibly exciting – even more so in this case, when the developers genuinely believe that what they’re building is strong enough to launch in a month that many other studios (including the industry’s triple-A giants) are dreading.

So, I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of respect for any indie team that dares to look the GTA 6 giant in the eye and say, “We’re launching in November anyway.” I will definitely try the full version of this baby!
